Nexus S review

The Nexus S is the latest Google-designed Android smartphone. Manufactured by Samsung, it is the first to release with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). We took it for a walk to see if it could keep up.

The "living on the Google edge" idea is a theory at best. The Nexus One phone, which is barely a year old, has not been upgraded to Android 2.3 yet. Don't get me wrong, I loves me Android and where the OS tech is going but their version management is shoddy at best and I would not hold my breath for OS updates.

I would post this from my HTC Desire but she is brok-ken and my VF845 backup phone won't connect to CellC 3G anymore :(

Any news about availability or price in South Africa?

Nothing yet, sadly :-(

Looking at Android's competitors this is a difficult argument to make.

Google could hold back the release of the OS until they are able to support their previous high-end device (like Apple does), but that wouldn't suit the community or manufacturers who would like to make use of the latest and greatest version of Android.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 has also only recently started receiving updates to the BlackBerry 6 OS in the UK some months after its initial launch with the Torch.

Also: Thusfar Google's phones have been the only ones to live "on the Google edge." No-one else has an Android 2.3 device out yet. As long as Google update the Nexus One before anyone else can update their devices to 2.3 their reputation remains intact. If someone gets a 2.3 device out *before* Google updates the Nexus One then I think it would be fair to say they dropped the ball.

I've been sold on this as my next handset since it was launched in the US. Can't wait for proper local availability and hopefully get it as my next contract upgrade.

Current compatibility

Hi,

Do you know if the Nexus S is compatible with our networks? Particularly in terms of 3G. I know it's supposedly factory unlocked, but I've read that in America the 3G is only compatible with T-Mobile's network. Wouldn't want to get one from there and be stuck with something that doesn't work.

Thanks

Does anyone have a provisional release date for this phone in SA? I seem to have set my hopes on this as an upgrade option.

Nothing yet. Vodacom is being very mum about it from the looks of it. Even if it lands with/after the slew of dual-cores (Atrix, Galaxy S2 etc.), I'd still say that you should consider it.

Yes, the Nexus S is already very outdated, can't see any point in it really.

Very outdated? Really? How's that? Yes it's not a dual-core CPU, but what exactly do you need one for right now? The GPU isn't the best on the market, but it's certainly still good enough for high-end gaming. It doesn't have the most RAM out there, but it's not a slouch.

The HTC Dream is very outdated; the Nexus S is mildly outdated and still has a lot going for it.
