"Google's gradual roll out of voice commands across its range of mobile and web services has continued with an update that makes "OK Google" recognisable across the Android system.

The Google Search 3.5.14 for Android update, allows users to summon the 'hotword' command from anywhere on their phone and tablet, even when the device is locked.

Users can turn on the enhanced hotword detection by heading to Menu > Settings> Voice and toggling the settings."

I updated my Google Search app but no go for me on S4. Any others here having success with this?

There goes your battery life ;)

I had to turn off GNow because of this. I don't mind a worthwhile app using a bit of juice. But this 'OK Google' thing just seems like I'm showing off and even tho the voice recognition is exceptional, overall, it's just not worth the battery it kills.

Also if it works while the phone is locked that surely means the phone is not going into deep sleep?

This is great news and something I have wanted for ages. Annoyed me that I always had to go home first before using it.

Been testing this out since yesterday (with all options enabled). Battery drain is pretty bad, I suspect if you have a newer Snapdragon processor (800 or higher) you won't see as much drain as these processors basically have a CPU extension which allows for wake out of standby which uses a lower power mode.

Older phones, like my S2, are not so lucky. It still works really well though and makes voice commands a lot more useful, especially when you're in the car.

I can't get Google Now to recognize certain contact names - and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to train it, anyone figure it out?

First make sure that Contact Recognition is enabled in Google Settings -> Accounts & Privacy.

Some contacts it will likely not recognise, like "Koos" or "Jannie". Best to give contacts nicknames if they're family (https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/4584610?hl=en)

Nope - just searched for what I said.

Lol :D

I find Google now is sometimes a pain with stuff like this. I also wish it would allow you to use voice to play certain songs, currently it only works by artist name, so you just have to listen to a random playlist of the band you're asking for. Still in development though and is pretty cool nonetheless, was driving yesterday asked Google to play some Metallica, took a few seconds and I was listening without touching anything.

Ok... so if I say "Call my wife" it asks me to pick a contact, so I do... then mobile.... then it calls.

End call.

Do it again... "Call my wife"... it asks me to pick a contact. :wtf:

I say call Wendy. It then calls my wife ;)

Edit : My wife said rename your wife's contact name to "My wife". Should work for you then :)
