Visited my folks this evening and at about 19h00 "google now" suggested I leave to get to my local bar! Had a good laugh.

On a more serious note though, do you have to have maps open to send traffic data? The route I take to work shows very little traffic data and hence always underestimates three travel time. obviously this will improve over time as more info is collected, but I'm all for it! screw three conspiracy theorists and there passion for privacy! whats wrong with customized ads, etc?

the whole privacy issue is a misnomer because most people think as individuals in a dataset they are actually important. im all for statistically personalized information. its the future.

Nope, it'll pop up in your notification bar. No need to have maps open.

My google now on my phone does not really do much but tell me the weather.. But that's because of the town I live in:D

Very cool app. Can't wait to try it in a big city

I'm in Lagos for the week and its proven quite useful. Hasn't quite got the traffic sorted though. Would be very cool if I was on holiday with things to see close by etc.

I don't get any cards when I open Google Search nor do I get the 3 dots bottom right to open Google Now settings.
All I can do is search. Nothing else.

This was fine on my S3. On a Note 2 now.

Any ideas?

Is your gmail signed in? Mine also stopped working until I signed in on my gmail app; working fine now.

Yup. All good there.

Note 2 here as well.
When I held in the home button and tapped the Google icon, I could also only search.
There were no on screen buttons for Google now settings but the left soft key gives you the option to set it up.

I doubt that's your issue though.

Google now knew where I worked before I gave it permission. The sample cards as I set it up showed a map to my work. Freaky. It doesn't quite get the traffic thing right in Cape Town though.

Clearly, what i meant was, does google harvest traffic data from your phone to improve their traffic maps when your google maps is closed? I try and leave maps open when driving on case they do only gather data when open.

the new nexus 4 running android 4.2 will have even more cards, but i think the nexus 5 will be out by the time i need an upgrade. also never had an LG phone before, found that a rather strange move. perhaps google is trying to distance themselves from apples targets on samsung.

is syncing turned on?

Ye. All sync options turned on. Signed into my GMail, TTalk, GEverything.
GPS active. Maps active. Home and work locations set.

Starting to get annoying now. Everywhere I read on the web they refer to the 3 dots to gain access to the Google Now menu at the bottom of Google Search. Nada for me. WTF.

I can't even stay on this screen. I see the top image in the top section for a short while, while the progress circle spins, then straight into the search screen.

After pressing the Google Search icon I get the following for a short period of time.
01.jpg

Then straight into this.

02.jpg

So no chance to even try get to settings, cards, etc...
