If you want royalties - make a programs everyone find extremely usefull, and cut a deal with an online entity so that you make that money in a non-intrusive and non-irritating way. Daemon-Tools also has a custom start screen and a toolbar - only you choose to install it. It's far better than some cheasy programs I've seen with enormous banners embedded in the program coupled with crippled funcionality.

If the Tax Man is concerned, why doesn't Mozilla just pass a lot of the money (but still in such a fashion that they don't run in the negative) to charities?

Just let them have it. It's really not that money and it's for a good cause.

Reward those who oppose the evil.

What is the 'good cause' you speak of, and how exactly do they oppose evil?

That's simple... M$ is the root of all evil. That's what is says in the scriptures... or maybe somewhere else, but I know that it is said somewhere. :D

it's the book of mozilla - enter about:mozilla in firefox address bar.
Hmmm... something suspect about that...

And why are they the 'root of all evil'?
Because they use their time to developed something in return for which they ask for payment, should you CHOOSE to use it?
Last I checked, they weren't holding a gun to your head forcing you to use their products.

I wasn't 100% serious when I made that statement. Really!

Anyway, the "should you CHOOSE to use it" argument can be used for just about everything. E.g. Why complain about broadband prices in SA, you don't have to use the internet, or why complain about medical aids - you don't have to use them....

Some of us (web developers) are actually forced to use M$ against our wills. Mainly because they don't give a rat's behind about standards. They make life more difficult for some....

Well, best to choose your words wisely then. Many people will take a statement like that seriously.

And no, that argument cannot be made for broadband prices in South Africa. Telkom is a regulated monopoly. With Microsoft, if you people do not like their product, the market is open for someone else to try make something better. With Telkom, that is an impossibility. Attempt to provide a superior service and the government will shut you down in a heart beat. This is why Microsoft is such a great company. They provide an offering that until now, no one in a free market has been able to match. Even in the video game console industry which they're a fairly new player in, Microsoft are coming out on top at the moment. They're that good at what they do. I imagine the world would be a lot worse off without them.

And you are not 'forced' to use the Microsoft developer platform. It's merely your best/only option, should you wish to cater to the consumer and make money. Consumers in general choose to use Microsoft products. You can therefore cater to that demand, or not.

I don't believe that they are the root of all evil. I believe that they are very, very evil. Then again, which large corporation is not?

The thing that I like most about Windows is that that vast majority of "viruses" are aimed at it. That means that as a Linux user, I'm not very likely to get infected when I surf the internet. So no, I don't want to see M$ disappear off the face of the earth. In a sense, they are keeping me safe. :D
