Is this maybe the difference between owning a company and believing in what you do and plundering a company as a fixed term CEO/employee in search of short term profits and large bonuses?

This is mostly the trend with CEO's having the "right" stuff. Instead of wasting the company's money in their own salary, they may own the building and the company rent's it from them.

Plus, by the stage Google is at, they don't need a salary because they excersize stock options and/or real estate (the physical offices rent etc)

I don't think this will filter through to Telkom though, seeing as it is run by shareholders and not the current "man in charge"... then again, his salary is WAY more than it should be.

Maybe they work it out according to Zimbabwe's inflation? Maybe he IS from Zimbabwe?

Google rocks. Period. Some of their policies regarding China suck, but as for the rest it is all good. At least from what I can see. They surprise the world around every corner, bend their company's corporate culture to what they believe and are having a good time doing business. Nobody can ask for better in a corporate environment.

They don't need salaries, they're billionaires Paying themselves $1 is for publicity so people think they're holistic or whatever.

Google execs are paid with shares not salaries. They get a (symbolic) $1 cash. But massive equity in shares.
