Google play store - can subscriptions use existing Play balance?

I had a big yearly app subscription coming up on my Google play account so I loaded a voucher which had almost double the amount needed for the subscription only for the subscription amount to be taken from my credit card and not the Play balance.

Is that the normal behavior and if so why?

You needed to go change the payment method for the subscription itself.

When purchasing a sub it will reuse the payment method that was used unless it fails and will then fallback to alternatives.

You would notice that also when you card expires, you cannot delete and old card until all the linked subs have been updated with a replacement.

Ok that makes sense, it's pretty annoying though because now I have a shedload of Google credit that I don't need.
