Google SA country manager Interview

All you need is a device as simple as a mobile phone to connect.

But first broadband prices need to come down, then people will be able to connect to the 'Net, and from there on things will take off.

The only thing blocking us at the moment's the exorbitant rape-your-wallet broadband pricing.

Masie’s brief is to bring Google innovation to SA
We need:
1 - Much deeper broadband penetration, i.e. Practically free.
2 - Much cheaper cost of marketing business online, i.e. Practically free.
3 - A 100% outsourced and self regulating product delivery service, i.e. Almost free, efficient and trusted.
4 - Clarity on customs issues. i.e. Red-Tape removal, replaced with clear and concise procedure.

I don't see how google is going to benefit from these, but hey Masie, lets see what you do, so far so uneventful.

Wasn't it Masie that told MBB that Google was going to host locally and then slammed MBB for reporting the comment?

A local Google server farm would improve the local experience enormously as well as reducing overseas bandwidth usage.

I'd like to know how much he has done for Google in SA in the past year or two since he's been in charge. So much talk and hype abt this guy but not much to show for it...at least I don't see it.

I would be interested to know what Google SA gets up to in their day to day activities. How about some info about that?

Yeah ... I was at the 2007 MBB conference in Vodaworld when Massie said "server farm this December" and was most disillusioned when it didn't. That's the same speech where he spoke about local SA talent can only reach the big time (as per YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, etc.) when cheap pervasive fast reliable broadband is readily available to the man on the street.

As far as I'm aware, Google is in the process of setting up their local server farm(s). I'm unsure of the timelines though, but at least some stuff should be up in the next couple of months.

He is such a forward thinker that he was actually talking about December 2056 when he said "this December", his brain was so focused on the future that he didn't realise it was still 2007.
