Google SA unveils its plans

Bah... thought the article was going to be about how Google SA is going to become local, as promised... :(

What is Google doing that is so revolutionary? I've read all the press articles about Google going "mobile" in SA, but what does this actually mean? I can browse to Google on my cellphone already - are they talking about a WAP service, or their new Android operating system for phones? Is this just a press release for the sake of it, or is there something meaningful here? As per Ginglung above, I think we'd benefit far more from Google actually hosting servers locally, than some kind of vapourware effort.

While I think of it, can you imagine how much international bandwidth would be saved if Google had a locally hosted presence and their rivals Microsoft allowed all those huge auto patches to be downloaded from a local web presence as well.

...are they talking about a WAP service...

At first glance it would seems to be the case - they will offer a search enging for cellphone users, but don't state whether it'll be SMS, MMS, USCD or WAP based.

Not all phones can display or access GPRS content.

Will be interesting to watch.

Maybe they plan on doing a local version of their goog411 service.
