Google Shuts Down Its Moonshot Wind Energy Unit Makani

Another one of those google pie kite in the sky ideas that gets canned.

Interesting that Shell invested into it. You would almost think they were deliberately investing in solutions that will generate intermittent power, which would create a demand for open cycle gas turbines.

Another terrible headline. Shell might take it over...

However, Shell — which has been supporting the effort for the past year — might possibly continue development with the technology.

This doesn’t mean the end of the road for the technology Makani developed, but it does mean that Makani will no longer be an Alphabet company. Shell is exploring options to continue developing Makani’s technology.

It's the nature of experimentation. For one, I applaud Google for allowing their employees to get creative and re-imagine the world.

Google/Alphabet has a great track record at pulling out.
Google+, Inbox (which was perfect), there must be more examples I can't recall right now.
So they are just a tease screwing over those that expect a happy ending.

Google had a mini documentary about their "Project X" a while ago, can't remember where I saw it, but it was just basically people trying new things all the time and they don't have a budget, that must be craploads of fun

Sounds more like research. Experimentation is taking something that works and making it work better.
