'Google Talk' Now Available

Personaly I like Google Talk. It seems alot cleaner than msnm, and being a GMail user realy ads conviniance :D

Whats going to make Google Talk interesting is that its not going to be so much a chat program as it is a communications platform. Google will open up their APIs and let third parties develop add ons. Plus they've built on top of open standards like Jabber and SLIP. I think this is what is going to win it for them.

Not the most beautiful and functional program to ever hit the internet but it certainly looks as if it has potential. No doubt features will be added in future versions but for a first release its not too bad.. voice quality is good as well.

I haven't read the specs yet up on Google.com, but does it support/use encryption for chat & voip like Skype does?

Otherwise not bad at all - just wish the chat and voip supported conferencing, but I'm sure that will come soon...:)

how do u get a gmail. account it says its in testing phase!

You need someone to send you an invite to one. PM me your email address and I'll send you an invite. Gmail also offers POP3 mail access not just mail access, which is also something the other free providers don't do. :-))))))

Best to continue that in this [post=281521]other thread about GMail Invitations...[/post]basically you can send me an email, and I can get my GMail account to send you an invitation, or for that matter any other forumites that don't already have GMail accounts :).

Matt Veenstra at Tribeworks has an interesting spin on things. He reckons Google's Instant Message Service is Not about Jabber but about Skype. Basically that google talk is just a prelimanary before they buy out Skype. Personally I think that would be great (although not from a privacy perspective), but I don't see it happening. They wouldn't have gone to the trouble of developing their whole own solution if they were just going to replace it with Skype in a few months.

i'm sure that under the hood, Google talk is quite amazing, but as a product, it nogal stinks, also installed it, saw that it didn't let me login to my gmail account using opera, and uninstalled it. Not to mention the fact that is ugly.
As noted on other forums, if this hadn't been Google, the product wouldn't have gotten a mention, b/c it's not worht it

Yup. Has problems connecting, and is seriously lacking in features and customisability. Mind you, that's true of many of Google's products.

That's why I've already deinstalled it again. Couldn't get a connection, neither from work nor home. Skype rules! (for now anyway...)
