Hm I see there's a Feedly for Chrome.. maybe I ought to give this a bash. Are they on track to fully replace the engine when Reader switches off the lights?

I moved to Newsblur .

Initially i tried Feedly, but their use of plugins on the Desktop browser (and no plugin for IE) is unacceptable. I simply do not have the luxury to control the PC and Browser i use . So until Feedly come up with a standard website, it's a no go for me.

Newsblur so far is very close to the Google Reader experience. It's not a "magazine" style reader. Newsblur got mobile apps on Android and iOS which works quite well and their desktop experience is compatible with any browser i want to use.

Newsblur also import all your feeds directly from Google Reader, so that is relatively easy . The only thing Feedly got a head start with is their promise that the feeds you set up in Feedly will be available via an API to other apps like Flipboard . This is pretty much what Google Reader did, so people maintained their feeds on GReader and then used whatever news aggregator app they want to read with, but this still needs to happen (maybe in the future i can configure my feeds in Feedly and read it via another browser website instead of using Feedly's plugin thing).

Newsblur I did try also but I found the layout quite clunky and refresh too slow. The Feedly layout is as close to GReader as I've found so far and I can sync with my phone and desktop.

I guess it depends when you tried it. They've ramped up their servers/speed and made alot of changes in the last few months. I remember it was extremely slow initially, and i skipped it and used Feedly for a month, and when i returned the layouts changed quite a bit.

The #1 voted feature request on Feedly is the main and only reason why i'm not using Feedly at the moment. If they fix that, i'll be back.

Make feedly available as full web service (no plugin or extension)

Because some companies have restricted admin rights and might not allow individual users to install plug-ins or extensions on their machines.

The fact that feedly has not responded or gave an update about this since march is not looking good. Even the 2nd most voted request (Windows Phone/Windows Mobile app) can be solved if they do #1 . As it is, there's no way you can use the service via the browser without a plugin (which mobile browsers can't do).

Because i'm actually reading my stuff on my desktop/laptop at work? Why should i sit on my phone and read? Yes, i CAN use the mobile app, but it's not synced with Newsblur on the desktop. In other words, i read a bunch of articles during lunch at work, i get home and then i read articles on my tablet or home PC. If i use Newsblur at work and Feedly at home, then nothing is synced or bookmarked (read/unread/favorites/read-later/starred/shared etc).

This includes my actual feed subscriptions, if add something on Newsblur, it's not on my Feedly list and vice versa. This is exactly why i used Google Reader in the first place, because i could maintain everything in one place.

So no, i want something that is totally in sync and integrated across all my devices. Google Reader was exactly that, without any restrictions on the desktop. The Newsblur mobile app is fine, i don't see why i should mysteriously switch to Feedly on mobile if Newsblur do the exact same thing (and it syncs).

Feedly, our favorite Google Reader replacement, announced today that they're opening their API to third party developers-including the people behind Reeder, Press, Newsify, and gReader-so you'll be able to access your Feedly feeds in all of those apps and sync across devices long before Google Reader sunsets. They're also planning on increasing their app's speed, adding search, an extension-free webapp, and more

I was aware that they are doing it, which is why they are still on my radar. But opening your API to 3rd parties does not give you a standard plugin-free website, which is platform and browser independent, like Google Reader was.

So either a 3rd party will create an HTML based website and use the API or Feedly will do so themselves. Unfortunately if Feedly leaves it to some 3rd party, it will not be here anytime soon.

Everyone who used Google Reader regularly like myself, already knew that Google Reader will be discontinued and should already have started using an alternative, which is why I have been using feedly for almost a month now.
 
Google has been killing so many good/open projects lately its scary. You don't even hear half of it unless you browse places like HN.
 
Waiting to see how the Digg reader will look before I choose

I just need to remember to do a backup at the end of the month.

Well yes that is what i said, only when they produce this will i consider a return. In the meantime, Newsblur is doing the job .
