From Orange, back to Orange- point is moot really, Nexus devices are sold in S.A. Maybe not from Google directly but the fact is they are available for purchase here. I'll admit I've not tried to return a device to them, so can't comment on the experience.

They are "sold in SA" in the same way that the Barnes & Noble Nook is. Meaning you have to import it via the Interwebs.

There is no official distribution and service channel, you can't buy them from a cellphone shop or get them on a contract. And until you can, they will remain expensive and not really an option for most people, especially if something goes wrong with it.

Exactly. In the US and Europe where they are ACTUALLY sold, they are a lot cheaper than other high end smartphones. A Nexus is supposed to cost a lot less than a Samsung branded phone, that's a large part of the appeal.

Anyway, I'm no longer arguing the point. I have Nexus, bought in S.A. with local currency. In my opinion, that means they're available here.

Because cell phone makers add some much of their own bloatware and crap into the software. When an update becomes available, cell phone makers first need to test and build with all their crap in it again

Next week sometime I need to look at a generic light firmware for my S3 mini. The thing has so much preinstalled crap that keeps on updating that I never use and you cant remove.

Any suggestions?

I just got Android 6.0.1 on my Sony Z2.

Sony actually seem be pretty decent with upgrades on older phones

Seems to me the forgetful ones are the service providers. Check other countries s5 updates, compare to South Africa
