Google wants smartphone makers to update Android faster

A smartphone is basically just a small computer. You wouldn't expect Acer, Dell, Lenovo, WebAfrica, Afrihost, etc to keep your laptop updated, so why should the smartphone manufacturer or the mobile network have anything to do with the update process of your smartphone? It's pretty well established that it's the manufacturer of the OS that's responsible for that.

Because cell phone makers add some much of their own bloatware and crap into the software. When an update becomes available, cell phone makers first need to test and build with all their crap in it again

It is but Dell and Lenovo do not limit the Windows updates on a desktop as they only provide the hardware with (these days optional) drivers.

On mobile it is limted by the manufacturer like Samsung that put their Touchwiz skin and drivers in the update. Additionally it is up to the mobile operators to release the OTA update. So it is not directly Google's fault that the manufacturers and network operators are not rolling out the updates.
 
Google talk to Huawei - my tablet hasn't received a single update since I bought it more then 1.5 years ago.

PRIV by BlackBerry gets it's security updates by the 1st week of every month.
BlackBerry promised Marshmallow in May and users already got them.

They are the only Android OEM that updates core apps via Google Play and does not need a system update to get it done.



Some Android flagships of last year are still waiting for the Marshmallow update.

There is no sense of having the latest hardware when you are still running old OS.

Blame the Service providers, even though they will try and blame Samsung.
Internationally Marshmallow is released/being released on S5.

Even my Sony Z2 tablet is already running Marshmallow, for almost a month now- and I waited for the OTA. Some of these manufacturers (looking at you, Samsung) really need to get their acts together.

Also, which apps are considered the core apps?

This is where reality meets your logic.

I have PC in my workshop ~ 8 years old. Still works fine. I update it regularly with MS patches.

Step into the bespoke Android world. Three years down the line the manufacturer stops rolling out updates for your phone. Can you simply update it? No. So now you either have to fork out again and again for a new phone, purely at the mercy of phone manufacturer, or you can get into the world of rooting or like.

At this stage I have a perfectly good Samsung Note II that is not receiving the newest updates. Meet Stagefright. As such I bit the bullet and loaded CyanogenMod.

However the normal user probably does not have this ability, your grandmas/grandpas/uncles/aunts/brothers/sisters/friends who are tech clueless. No disrespect to any of these, some people are tech savvy, some not (Your mom & pop will probably just ask you anyway). This is a major security problem and a perfect storm waiting to happen.
