Android comes with a kill-switch

Only for use if device discovers human emotion

Google has put itself in charge of policing Android devices. The search giant is retaining the right to delete applications from Android handsets on a whim.

Unlike Apple, the company has made no attempt to hide its intentions, and includes the details in the Android Market terms and conditions, as spotted (http://www.computerworld.com/action...rticleBasic&articleId=9117279&source=rss_news) by Computer World:

Google may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement ... in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion.

But the existence of the capability opens more questions about the platform.

The clause only covers applications distributed through the Android Market, but the whole point of Android is that anyone can distribute any applications they like. Mobile publisher Handango has already stated (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/02/handango_android/) it will be selling Android applications through its web site.

So will Google be able to remove applications installed by someone else? We've asked Handango and the Open Handset Alliance (nominal owners of Android), but haven't heard back as yet.

Such a mechanism also implies that Android devices will be regularly reporting back to Google to download the latest list of unapproved applications.

Quite how that will operate isn't clear, but we've asked the questions and look forward to letting you know exactly how much control Google will be exerting over the G1 once we hear back.

This is a little bit worrying to say the least! Let's hope that Google will only use it to remove apps that may damage the phone or software.

In a sense it does make up for the the user having the responsibility to protect the device from malware etc.

We know how few end users acually installs anti virus apps.

I don't think Google will use this to delete software left, right and center.

So you buy some software, google decides that it is not what they want in their plan for global domination and they delete it? Do they offer you a refund?

the only software I ever bought for my cellphone was the f-Secure anti-virus... everything else is freeware. I think I will stick with the freeware now. ;)

And will they pay for the bandwidth used to report back to domination HQ? 3G ain't cheap you now....:D

Suddenly all those crazy Google-taking-over-the-world-conspiracy threads are starting to worry me :o

+1

Haha - a good point indeed.

I think that Google are really overstepping here.
What if the phone does more than just send back that particular info?
Foil-tin hat to the ready people! :D

lol...Finally, now we can give the 'ol iPhone appstore hatred discussion a rest...

Relax ppl...Its opensource...so it'll take just under 1h until there is a community release minus the kill switch and calling home part. ;)
