Ok so the i5 Imac is selling here for 22 999 at digicape and its 1999 in the states. The new macbook which is 2199 in the states is listed at 21548 (estimated price). Now 200 dollars is 1500 rand or there about excluding taxes and duties etc. means, the core i5 iMac should be 1500 cheaper not 1500 more expensive.

Is that $1 999 including the tax that is not listed on many American sites, including the Apple Store. You probably took this into account so... :)

My answer is: Core are taking a cut and up'ing prices for greater profits. Although I heard that for some stock Digicape is getting around Core, not sure on the truthfulness of this statement.

If they go around core then the stock is automatically deemed grey as they are just an authorzied reseller, and not distributor.

The two prices were taken for the apple store in the US websites. If the first excludes vat, then the seconds excludes vat as well. Its ridiculous that something that 200 dollars more sells for 1500 less! Can't believe there is no part of the government willing to step in and do something about this!

The US Apple store excludes VAT so you much include this when making comparisons... The VAT is added later when you put in your postal code and it know which state you are in as the tax differs... I can't really understand what you were trying to say in the orignial post though so not going to say you are wrong ;) And I agree with you the pricing of Apple products in this country makes no sense...

ok burn this is how it is... laptop in states for 2199 here for 21 999. (10 times increase). iMac in states for 1999 here for 22 999 (11.5 time increase). Why the difference ? Should all products come in with the same % tax and vat etc. etc. etc. ??

Maybe it is due to different exchange rates when the iMac was shipped or just the fact that the iMac would have a greater shipping cost due to size and weight? Also the one price is an estimate, expect it to rise ;) Do any of the other products have the same US to SA ratio?

Costs of shipping increase as the size of the product does? A 4.5kg laptop vs 20kg iMac is bound to make a bit of difference.

Cost 1500 to ship 20 kilos from the US? Also the iMacs don't weigh 20 kilos...

Also maybe the exchange rate is slightly better than it was a few months ago.

They should have brought in stock quite recently, since all the stores were sold out of the quad cores. They can't justify their prices and someone should question them! Popped a mail to enquiries asking them, they say ask someone more senior, but dont want to provide me with contact details.

In lieu of evidence to the contrary if Amazon claims the 27" iMac has a shipping weight of over 42lbs I'm inclined to believe them.

Oh - and UPS quoted me $1,159.69 to send it and DHL $1011.62.

Please explain to me how you get 11.5x increase?

US$1999=R14 933.79

When you land that product in SA you have to pay R14933.79x1.1=R16427.17+14%VAT=R18726.97

Now the amount of R18726.97 does not include any shipping, wharfage/handling fees or distributor markup. All these additional fees you could probably work into the shortfall of R4272.03 to come to your R22999 local price.

Ever compared prices of local components to those on Newegg?
