Got pulled over

Ok, so you're just not allowed to drive it yet but it's on your name.

I still drive it if I need to - get tyres for example, etc...

I keep it on its current plate with its current license disk until absolutely everything is sorted

You can register a car without roadworthy. You pay for both registration and licensing, get the reg papers and then get the licensing receipt without the license disk at the bottom of the paper

Really doesn't sound plausible hey.. Did this a while back and before you get the Reg you need to provide the road-worthy certificate.

Maybe @ShaunSA can help us out here?

Ahoudet is right :)

The point of this thread is to know if I'm in the wrong or I did waste an hour of my life.

So driving back home with some friends after eating out, SAPS pulls me over. I get out of the car, the officer calls me by surname not sure how he knows but he then asks for my license, I hand it over and the usual have you been drinking bla bla.

So he proceeds to ask my friends to get out and he searches and whatever. Then he says there's a problem and I ask what and he goes on about the number plate not matching the license disc.

I explain that I got the car registered but I didn't do the road worthiness test hence the disc has the old number plate but its still valid.

He goes about there is going to be a fine. Being SAPS he can't issue a fine so we follow him to where the Metro guys are, I don't know the CBD well.

The Metro guy says technically you can't issue a fine but it's falsifying plates so now we go on another trip to Durban station because I'm about to be arrested.

We get there, he decides to radio someone giving them my number plate and they give my info as the registered owner. Then they go on to give the previous number plates, VIN number etc.

At this point he asks for the previous number plate, and I explain when I did the new number plates they disposed of the old one. Which is illegal according to him.

After hearing the argument over and over again, eventually I was told I can go.

TLDR: New registration number plates not matching old valid license disc, is it illegal to be on the road.

When you get new plates you get a new disk... you should have put that on.

The cop was right to check it out.

Okay that makes sense, didn't know I should have kept it.

Basically the car got registered on my name but I didn't renew the license but its still valid.

That was your first mistake, the license is not actually valid and you have a short while to get a new disk after you take ownership. I made that mistake once and ended up having to pay penalties when the "valid" license expired and I went to renew it.

How could you register it without the roadworthy? It's part and parcel of the deal.

And then part of that process is a new license and new numberplates, so I don't know how the old number plate is even relevant anywhere?

Surely you have new paperwork with the new numberplate?

Aah yes now it all makes sense.

Yes you have 21 days after registration to re-license it on your name.

But I'm not sure how he got new numberplates if he didn't re-license it?

You did nothing wrong, they wasted hours of your life. Those guys can't event spell so forget about it. Bunch of morons.

J534 - simmilar to a spot fine.

#EDIT - Sorry - only now saw Defib's answer. He's right yes... And because the reisters are not caried around in the vehicles you would escort\be escorted the the police station to get the paperwork done.

Always a good idea to read a thread before responding

I disagree with you completely. The license disc differed from the number plates. That is illegal. SAPS did their job for a change. I wish they and the metro police check more vehicles. Cars with fake number plates are not usually used for legal purposes. The OP probably really just made a mistake, but that does not mean the SAPS should not do their job and make 100% sure it was just a mistake.

At the time the "valid" license was expiring in September so I didn't think much of it.

So like I said, insurance needed the COR urgently so I went to http://onestopzn.co.za/ gave in all the required paper work since it would have been faster than me sitting in a queue then filling out the form wrong(first car) then sitting in a queue all over again.
I was told I didn't do the road worthiness test so I have to do it before I can renew the license, the guy made the plates and put them on for me.

Weird.

My insurance just needed the papers of the vehicle. Regardless of the owner.

As it stands I handed in the previous owners as I'm waiting for it to be registered in my name.

Then I have the 21 days to go license.
