Hi, my one Italian friend got Gout. He wants to know how to cure it. He does not drink, does not eat much meat, but lots of pasta and his food is always a bit hot for me. Typical Italian, short and a tummy. He is about 60 now, very hard working, does not practice, like gym or jog, just work, work, work.

Any advice please.

Dramatically increasing water intake is the easiest solution (helps flush out uric acid). It's doubtful whether that alone will fix it though.

Beyond that lifestyle changes & if that doesn't help then meds.

If it is gout above suggestions good or doctor will have to prescribe a preventative like Puricos but you will have to continue taking for life

The world's best kept secret is Piroxicam !!! R15.00 for 5 tablets OTC and you may only need 1 !!!

He needs to change from a highly acidic diet to an alkaline one.

Gout forms acidic crystals in your feet and usually in the big toe.

Before reaching for the anti-inflammatories and Puricos, he also needs to understand a lifestyle change is needed going forward.

For quick relief, ask the pharmacist for their gout cocktail which is about R20. It's a couple of tablets taken to quickly provide relief, but in essence it's anti-inflammatories and acid-lowering tablets.

Though acidic in itself, lemon juice has an effect of alkalizing the bloodstream once metabolized and thus apparently helpful with gout.

Not recommended. If you just kill the pain without addressing the underlying cause then the uric acid crystals will shred your joints to bits...

Ice water with lime cordial and Apple cider vinegar.
The intertubes also seems to have lots of faith in tart cherry juice & there does seem to be some evidence to support this. (too lazy to google - those interested feel free).

Cut down or cut out foods high in purine like seafood, meat, peas etc.

Is it gout? If he has had these symptoms for years and years, then probably yes. I doubt it just suddenly started at the age of 60.
SO, how long and what are the symptoms?

I found trying to change diet was not sustainable, so doc put me on Puricos and I haven't had an attack in 8 years. I'm going to try alkaline powder now as it's probably safer (and cheaper).

Diet can be a trigger, but most people are just gout sufferers and others aren't.
You are either a "under excreter" or an "over manufacturer" of uric acid. Either way the "cup" is always on the brink of overflowing and this causes the gout attack.

Go to a doctor and start the long, painful and convoluted process of finding the correct Puricos dosage. This gets your uric acid levels under control. Water and apple cider vinegar helps, but is not the cure. Gout kits handle the symptoms in a small way if taken immediately when you feel that familiar twinge of gout onset, but usually are useless ( for me ).

Exactly this. The list of foods that "can cause" gout, is so long that I would need to live on water alone.

For interest sakes: how many mg are you on currently? I'm on 400mg, but my doc says he has clients up to 900mg
