"The [Australian] government has committed $50 million over the next three years, in a bid to help connect people in metropolitan areas who have been unable to access broadband."

Maybe one of our future aims should be to put pressure on Government to make a similar commitment. Ideas, comments?
 
Erm, seeing as the government owns 38% of Telkom already, cant they use that ill begotten funds to develop our communications? Put it to use! Instead of government selling their Telkom shares, use those shares against Telkom!
 
I think it is time to ramp our action up a notch. We need a public hearing with Minister Ivy and her highest officials.

In order to get a hearing we need to petition her office......

We also need to take the presentations, all of them, from the ICASA hearing and precis them into one presentation on behalf of the user community.

We need to invite the CEO's of all the other telecomms players (including Telkom) to make presentation.

We however set the agenda.

I propose that we start a new Category specifically for putting this together called "Mass Action" and identify from our ranks members who will be able to post there and make announcements there on progress (in other words, select the team to put this together - and yes i am volunteering my time effort and some spare cash) - all other members read only. Any subsequent discussion can happen under other headings. Private messages and emails for suggestions and we keep our presentation absolutely covert until the hearing.

So what angle? Consumer driven so "Consumer call for DSL technology reform and progress?

I think this is vital - we need to lobby govt to form a coherent broadband and e-commerce enabling policy - with firm targets for uptake and affordability.

Good idea for the future but shouldn’t we be putting more pressure on gov to keep the promises already made: deregulate the telecoms industry, SNO. Maybe we should draw up a petition or a little demonstration on Ivy's doorstep or something. I am willing to try anything at least once! :cool:

Absolutely. This is FUN as well as progressive guys. Think about it - all the press we can generate getting the hearing - the interest there will be in the outcome both locally and abroad. Furthermore, HOW PRAY TELL can Telkom possibly defend any position they take? And its PUBLIC.

When people post new threads PLEASE for heaven's sake say WHICH government etc. you are talking about. ie: "AUS GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO EXTEND BB". Otherwise we get all excited for nothing...
 
Why not organise a protest?

I'm pretty sure that most employer would encourage employees to protest for a couple of hours on one day (if it might lower his internet bills)...

Maybe a protest in all major cities?
