Hi all, wonder if someone can confirm perhaps? I've heard plastic/perspex number plates are illegal in GP. The only requirements I can find on the AA website is that they need to be certain sizes, mounted with rivets, be at a certain height etc. Nothing is mentioned about what they should be made off. As such I wonder if plastic/perspex ones that are riveted to the car are OK?

They are illegal unless you can find a place that will put the right sans/sabs stamps on them.

Why not just have the metal ones made at an accredited place?

I wonder why some have theirs made with unapproved fonts and materials...

Yeah they must comply with the SANS/SABS standards. Why do people want to mod absolutely everything?

Yeah I don't get it, just get whatever you can at a good price.

What I can't understand is how these guys drive around with the numbers/chars "bled" into the border to distort them, sometimes to the extent where most digits are obscured, they should be stopped and arrested and the car impounded imo.

To fool E-toll and other NPR systems?

Just cause the metal ones look crappy. The perspex ones look way better. That's just my personal point of view. I'll have a look for a place that makes the perspex ones that are SABS approved and will revit them on.

You are wasting your time. IF you do perchance find a place, post the address so that we can report the place to the authorities.

You are probably one of 5 people who think so

Weird, I didn’t know this was a thing.

In Cape Town they are all Perspex.

You’d struggle to find metal ones on any newer car.

Metal or plastic with a metal backing?

I haven't seen true metal ones in ages. They are all plastic cover with a metal or other backing. I think what the OP is looking for are ones made entirely out of Perspex. Iow ones that look and function completely different to the standard.

In Cape Town they are made out of Perspex entirely. Have been for many years.

They have a reflective backing and that’s it.

Most are just stuck on with double sided tape on cars. Bikes and select few cars you need to drill through it to bolt it in place.

Been ages since I’ve seen a car with the bracket from factory that it slots into, but I’m sure they also still exist.

Here's the old metal ones

and the newer plastic ones

The picture doesn't show it clearly but the newer ones have a plastic cover over what is usually a metal sheet or in some cases another backing. There are no plates made entirely out of plastic like I believe the OP wants.

Cool I didn't know you get metal ones with a plastic cover it. I personally just don't like the metal alone ones. Yes in CPT the plates are 100% plastic and allowed to be but they must be attached to the car with 4mm revits or one way self tappers. I'll have a look for the metal ones with the plastic covers at a legit SABS approved place as I don't want to put anything illegal on. Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

I’ve heard this rivet story, but I’ve never actually seen it applied by any car dealer or noticed it on any new cars.

Have never had a number plate riveted on any car and have never had it mentioned when pulled over.

Is this actually legitimately a requirement?
