Hi!
I would like to know how to get a constant IP address as to set up an FTP server using GPRS.
The problem is, when using DNS to route to my IP it gets the MTN tower that I connect to, and the IP's that are beyond the tower, ie between the tower and me, are hidden.
Is there an IP that is hidden somewere that I could use to get past this? Is it possible to connect via a different access point to accieve this?

IP address issue

I have a similar prob am trying to use my laptop as a "server" but cannot connect 2 it, even when i detect the "true" ip address. The way I did this was 2 ping my desktop and view the ip in my firewall..

hi, if both of your devices are connected to GPRS on the same APN, you will be able to access each other. But you wont be able to access your GPRS device from the Internet. You GPRS device gets allocated a private IP address on Internet and MyMTN APN and this in turn gets translated to public IP address.

public ip

apparently there is a way to get a public ip address assigned.... It seems 2b kept very hush hush?? Know anything bout this??

I a vpn APN might work but not sure, and not sure what the actual APN is either, not much help lol.

If you use the INTERNETVPN APN, you get allocated with a public IP that does not get translatted. But still wont be able to access the unit form the internet.

This is not unlike the problem I'm having with playing a Direct IP game of Tiger Woods with a friend of mine. We're both dialled up via our MTN cellphones, but we can't see each other's games. One person needs to serve, and the other connects to that IP, but for the same reason explained above, it's not working.

Am I correct in assuming that if we both Dial *99*1#, we'll be using the same APN? That doesn't help either. His IP is usually in the 172.26.x.x range, and mine is 172.25.x.x.

Any ideas appreciated.

On the Vodacom forum I read that all ports are blocked to devices that is conected to the GPRS network. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=32730

I don't know if this is true if two devices are connected to MTN GPRS and using the same APN. If the 172.x.x.x IP is a private one, how will they know where to find each other if it is NATed somewhere?

I spoke to technical staff on the MTN help line and told them that I would like to do a remote desktop and host a FTP server etc from my gprs connection. They tod me, after a long time discussing it between themselves if I might add, that you need to come as a corporate firm or small business to subscribe to a vpn APN. Once you have this you have your own public IP and all of these type of problems would be solved. Don't know about you guys but I cant afford this even if I went corporate.

Anyway. hope this helps.

I hear you, had te same query a while back and they also offerd me a corporate apn, like ja thats gonna happen, its for a 3 man business hallo

Didn't Vodacom promise an open APN, where no ports will be blocked??

If I test my GPRS connection it always says all my ports are stealthed!!

:)

If you have two devices connected with GPRS and need the two communicate with each other - in the same area - Make sure they using the same APN name - if not make sure you getting your IP's in these ranges together.
(172.24/16 and 172.25/16) OR (172.26/16 and 172.27/16)

GPRS is not really there to provide HTTP / FTP traffic to the outside world. The private IP's should be able to communicate though...

Other option (chargable) is to get MTNNS (Network Service) to create a seperate APN on your own VPN but doubt if you want to go that route...

GPRS GPS GSM TRACKER

Hi everyone,
I am using a GPS tracker in my vehicle which works also on the GSM GPRS network using a mtn card, the supplier stated that I could control the vehicle both by sms and also if I wanted to with a software platform which they supplied with the product, however I would need to program the port on my pc, the one in the tracker and that of the GSM network as the same. I was able to do that however the software still was not able to communicate with the device when on the internet, the SMS features are working well and the device can be easily controlled using a mobile phone, however the GPRS feature cant be used when on the pc, is there a way to communicate with a device which is on the GPRS network be it a mobile phone, or a GPS device from one's own pc? and if so what is the procedure, do IP's play a roll in it, I am currently on a public ip broadband access using a broadband router with DHCP enabled. Any one out there who can be of assistance would be much appreciated.
Thanks
