Hi

Anyone have any idea who I talk to to find out why my EDGE phone (I-Mate K-Jam) never connects faster than standard GPRS speeds!? Fastest I ever got on the telkom adsl speed test was around 50kbps!

I'm in Fourways/Bryanston, and I've tried in Dbn too!

P.S. I'm using it as a bluetooth modem for my laptop, if that makes any difference? On MTN contract.

Thanks
James

Have you set the speed of the port that the modem is using? I think the Windows default value is 57600 but you can set it up to 115200 (maybe even higher) under the phone & modem options properties tab in Windows control panel.

As far as I know the jam and k-jam only have gprs not Egde for that you need a jamin

K-Jam does have EDGE support. Are you sure your area has EDGE though? Do you get the 'Yello Broadband' cell info display?

I have found MTN woefully behind in this regard - Stellenbosch does have EDGE and it works very well with my 6230 + bluetooth dongle to PC, but S/West does not have.

I would be happy with EDGE speeds, but GPRS is too slow and MTN's strategy in this regard is anyone's guess... they seem more interested in Nigeria, etc.

My wife has just bolted a Vodacom 3G contract on to her existing package, and that's what I will be using. MTN just seem so disorganised....

Went to Leaf today and the upgraded the ROM. Got 100kbps afterwards, although its back down to 50 now (guess I must be attached to a non-EDGE tower). I can never see what the message from the provider tower is on my phone - where do I look!?

Hi

Diplos is correct. Even though you have EGDE on the Imate KJAM, you may not be in an "EDGE covered " area. Fourways is fully covered though....

Regards

Nokia N80??

Can anyone tell how long it takes the service providers to test the phones??? I've heard that cell-c have the N80 only, i can upgrade my mtn from begining of this month and i need to upgrade to N80, can anyone tell when is comiing???

Problem with MTN edge

I did a speed test on the MTN tower called 15/30/12 Clubview. Had 5 bars (full) edge reception according to my Sierrawireless 775 aircard. The SW 775 is the last word in edge technology - class 12 and I expected download speeds of 20 KB/s +.

Download speed was 5.9 KB/s - good GPRS speed., My theory is that MTN is skimping on stabilizing their edge network because they have to catch up to Vodacom's HSPDA.

MTN please investigate as it seems that the original complaint was very valid.

Good day,

Speed will depends on various factors, but if that's the max you getting then I'm a little concerned.

If you use a data cable the speed should be a little faster but I'm using my Nokia N70 with as a Bluetooth modem and it works like a bomb.

Could you please PM me your MSISDN just want to check something.

Thanks MTN DD

Hi all

The HSDPA coverage layer has been included in the public coverage map.

The 3G and 2G layers will be updated soon.

Please give feedback if you notice significant errors in the data.

We’re trying to speed up the coverage drill down using the icon in HSDPDA areas.

Test

17:45; Tower id on cell: Clubview extension 15/12/40;

5 bar edge connection on Sierrawireless 850:
Download time: 102.172 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 39.9 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 4.9 (kiloBytes/second)

5 bar GPRS connection on Sonyericson p910 (Opera browser):

4.5 kB/second

It seems as if the investment in Edge is not really worth it or MTN please fix whatever is wrong in your towers!

And sorry to answer your question - Can anyone advise on how long it takes us to test the phones before they are released???

It really depends on the product and the priority that's been set. If it's a basic GSM handset with no external data
it does go a bit faster compared to a top of the range handset. It also depends on how many faults we pick

up on the device. But normally you look at about 3 - 4 weeks.

Thanks

Here is the official reply

Hi Clive,

I think you can tell him not to cancel, as we are well underway with our rollout (for now). Phase two should be completed be the end of March, 2007. He’ll have at least a month before his contracts expires. J

I’m sorry it took so long for this reply, but I was waiting for additional info. It is apparent that the Bellville/ Parrow Cluster is marked priority 3, after Sea-Point and Observatory. The surveys and preparations for these sites have been done according to the priority list, and Ericsson will be implementing and activating accordingly. As I said, no promises, yet.

@MTN DD , any idea when lansdowne, cape town will be rolled out with 3G
