Guys I know that most probably there has been a post on this subject before. Avoiding to hijack someone's thread, I started this one.

I intend to buy a GPS Navigation device, I'm not a brand freak, and hence my budget will be max R2000, I need your advice on which GPS navigator I can get considering the specified budget.

This one by Hifi-Corp seems like a good deal, its JNC (OEM-Chinese manufactured) (not the entry level Navig8)http://www.hificorporation.co.za/products/detail/jnc_gps_gps715w/ it sells for R1799

Another one that I'm considering is TomTom GPS ONE and Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS.

You can also state which GPS navigator your using, its accuracy, reliability and fuctionability. I'm willing to up my budget because this will be a long-term purchase item(with probable life-span of 5 years).

Warm Regards,

PS! Thank You in advance for your well thought inputs

TomTom without a shadow of a doubt imo but rather spend that bit extra and get the XL instead...

Garmin Nuvi 205w

I have the Garmin Nuvi 205w, had it for a while now and for me it's the best. It doesn't have MP3 and MP4 but do you really need that in a GPS. It's also not top of the range but it does what I need it to do. It has a nice wide screen (4.3") and even warns you for traffic cameras. You can also upload Geotagged photos and then it can take you to that photo. It comes with a 1gb SD Memory card. But if you can maybe up your budget a bit more and you do need it go for the Nuvi 215w, it also have hands free calling via Bluetooth. One more thing the wide screen looks alot better than the TomTom ONE. Hope this will help you.

I'm tempted now...:D

I've got 2 TomTom ONE's, and would recommend them.
Even my gf can use it properly.

They go for around R1500.

A review here

Great review article, I cannot wait to come back to SA. Its like you were expecting the worst from your gf

Garmin without a doubt. I have one and they are great. Mapping very good.
Tom Tom may be good but being new in SA, wonder what their maps are like?

TomTom2 and Garmin 1

Garmin vs TomTom

I've got an samsung omnia pda which came with a Garmin nav system. I then installed TomTom version 7.

TomTom wins hands down for speed, the maps are so much more responsive.
TomTom too wins hands down when it comes to the time it takes to calculate a route.
TomTom wins for ease of finding a destination by address... finds it every time.

Garmin wins for voice commands, I feel better informed by the garmin when driving.

Garmin 7/10
TomTom 9/10

PS the TomTom maps are from October 2008... very new.

Buying a GPS devices is stupid. I have Garmin XT on my phone and it is by far the best. It beats the crap out of TomTom and Nokia Maps.

Rather buy a phone with GPS built in. People need to cut down on their gadgets as it makes a huge carbon footprint producing them. Instead of having a GPS, Cellphone, PDA, Laptop, Music player, Camera, Watch....etc... Just get a smartphone.

Yup, and if u lose or break your phone u no longer have a GPS, Cellphone, PDA, Laptop, Music player, Camera, Watch....etc...

Stay FAR away from the JNC GPS! I know a lot of people that bought a JNC gps from hifi corp, and everyone I know had to send their gps back for repairs. You will have a lot of problems with a JNC gps rather buy TomTom or Garmin.

JNC is already out of the question, I'm looking at a TomTom One or XL at the moment:rolleyes:

AFAIK they all use the same mapping supplier - it boils down to the quality of the hardware and software and imo TomTom wins hands down in that department, having used both before...;)

You only lose things if you have to many of them lying arond and you cannot keep track of them.

I use an Omnia with Garmin XT, and would definitely recommend something from the Garmin. Only other GPS I've ever used is something called a Mio, so can't comment on the TomTom, and only had bad experiences with JNC products, so personally I cannot recommend them.

EDIT: Oh, and the Garmin Mapsets have been updated recently! :D

Nokia Maps are very up to date for cities, but in the platteland they fail big time. Thats why I have Garmin XT and Nokia Maps on my phone. They best of the best.

TomTom map updates are free...
Garmin map updates incur a fee..

Used both.
I'm a cheapskate with GPSs - so TomTom gets my vote.

:D
