Which GPS software for use on cellphones is available, with SA maps?
I know about Rout66

HandyMap works very well ... signaling vs mapping is done very well (ie it shows you in the middle of the intersection when you are in the middle)
TomTom 6 works very nicely as well ... their realtime tracking is better (smoother movement on the GPS map), but I did struggle to find a location with it (searching with HandyMap is much easier)

Other than that, the two are pretty similar ... I will (hopefully) test-drive (pun intended) Route 66 sometime this week.

I am gettin Handymap Ai Gold 2morrow i hear it has the best coverage in SA and is the best when it comes to searchin for your destination that is SA. It should be so since it is made in SA. I don't trust Garmin since you have 2 pay every year for maps that are not really good. Handymap seems to be the only software with free map updates and a free PC version. If you know any other software that offers the same please tell me! I want something with good support and is very easy 2 use and don't want 2 be tied into 2 many costs!! Not every1 can afford the top range garmin unit(the only garmin that will operate well) and the updates(if there are any still waitin to hear if any1 in SA has gotton SA gramin map updates)

You struggle wit it before you can be on your way!

Garmin's voice routing really sucks badly:mad: Handymap and Tom Tom is the best of them all. Handymap gives free map updates 3 times a year and is very up to date with traffic cams/warnings as well.:D

 Does garmin offer free updates? I haven't heard of any map updates from garmin jus new software and new units. How much is garmin askin a year 2 be user without updates!?

I have a Garmin Nuvi 310. It's a fantastic unti and the voice navigation is brilliant. There are free updates - software and points of interest ie. fixed camera speed traps, mobile camera speed traps, road block favorites, high accident areas and more. Also, it has bluetooth technology allowing it to be a hands free kit for you phone in the car. I have found no problem with the maps. I think that new updated maps will cost about R180 every two years or so. There is no yearly cost as you seem to think.

There you have it. Many differant opinions :)

I think Route 66 is the best for mobile phones. Tomtom is also nice but finding locations is a bit tricky.

My friend has Garmap version 3 and has not recieved updates since he purchased the software. If you could give me sum info on how I can help him get updates that would be good cause he jus recently paid R741 online for map updates that he already has since he got the unit when the last update was released last year november as far as we both know. Who do we call to get these "free" updates for R180 every 2 years.

Yes for your phones route 66 is the best:D but when you come to smartphones and PDAs i think HandyMAP in the most compatibile and stable for that:o

I use HandyMap, and don't like it. I found quite a few mistakes in the maps, like one ways it tells you to turn down, non-existant off-ramps, missing streets. All of which my dads Garmin GPS have correctly. I think Garmin has WAY better city coverage, whereas HandyMap has better small town coverage.

Haven't tried the other two.

Handymap

Can you view your altitude on a smartphone/ PDA with handymap?

I'm using Handmap Ai Gold

I'm on my way to London for a couple of weeks and I'm looking for UK maps that work with Handymap (ie the G10 file format).

No luck so far. Does something like that exist or should I now buy Tomtom or something else?
