Hi Guys

I need help. Since yesterday my gs4 battery has been draining really fast. I had a look at the battery stats and the gpsd wakelock is causing the phone not to sleep resulting in the battery drain. I tried a factory reset but still the problem persists. Please can someone help? I asked some people and they also seem to have the problem since today or yesterday.

Note: Location services, gps, etc are all off

Oh thank goodness it's not just me, was about to create a post about this same issue.

Mine started doing exactly the same thing yesterday morning. Not like I upgraded to a new OS version or anything, no changes to apps.

I did a bit of searching online and some people seem to indicate it is a network issue. I'm currently on Cell C (for my sins...), and yourself? A work colleague of mine has been experiencing the same issue for a few months on Vodacom (her phone is currently back in again with this issue), whereas mine has been fine until now so it could be a network issue maybe?

Ok so that potentially helps. Apparently it is to do with just having mobile data enabled. [Source] What I am going to try during the course of the morning is to disable mobile data completely, just stay on wifi and see if the problem persists. Will revert back later.

Thanks will let you know if I find a solution. Apparently GSAM battery monitor helps so see what's causing the issue

So disabling mobile data seems to help, also roaming on Vodacom seems to help. But neither of these are really great solutions...

Gpsd kicks in when your phone can't get a stable signal, happens on Vodacom a lot strangely not MTN or Telkom mobile. How I've solved it is to just put my mobile data to 2g only as it only kicks in when trying to stabilise when switching to hdpsa and edge. Edge speeds are fine for WhatsApp

Is there any cellc reps on the forums that can shed light on the issue. And why is it only an issue on the gs4 and not other handsets?

Hey Lupus, thank you for the feedback. I find it strange that it would just start out of the blue on Cell C, since they have had terrible signal for ages...

In the interim I think I will use your solution, thank you.

So I called Cell C, they were less than helpful. They weren't aware from the problem, they told me to install an Anti-Virus app on my phone...

It's not only CellC it's with Vodacom to and it depends on area for me. It also affects gs5 and I've seen xperia z with the issue to on some forums.

Thought I was the only one with this problem. Anyway I have defaulted to edge. Is there no way to auto enable 3G When the screen is on?

This is an Android issue, I remember 1st seeing it on my GS3 in 2012, apparently it has something to do with Fast Dormancy of the phones modem and if the network doesn't implement it right on their side or whatever then it can cause the phone to not totally go into deep sleep, my GS4 started acting up a month ago due to GPSD, the one night I was in a nightclub and felt my phone heating up in my pocket, took it out and found that it had gone from 100% when I left home an hour ago to 67% at that point, checked battery stats and GPSD was the number 1 culprit, I think it was sitting at like 60% of battery consumption, rebooted the phone and it calmed down, very strange issue.

Will this issue ever be resolved? I use my phone to browse so edge doesn't work for me. I also noticed that if I switch to 3g the gpsd wakelock stays until I restart my phone. This isn't cool...

I have the same issue...Even reset the phone ans removed all apps...not solved. Did this happen after the last update of firmware. It was a small one!

Hi There,

I am also experiencing the same problem (Cell C Gs4), before this I got 2 days on single charge. Did a hard reset and disabled location services with no luck.
Consulted numerous forums which concluded this appears to be a network related issue.
Everyone who is experiencing this problem should contact their service provider, the more complaints the higher the priority.

Hi Nadeem, try checking the battery usage on the device.
this will indicate what is draining your battery.
go to settings and select the battery option.

wow I was just reasearching this, thought it might be location services. How unfortunate, extremely annoying issue.
