HELP!!!

I'm looking to finally spend money on a graphics card, never done this before as I've always inherited friends old cards and I'm not a gamer. It does however bother me that my score in Vista is 3.0 because my card is holding me back. It's a 7300GS something or other:( The rest gives me 5.9 on memory/cpu/hdd.

I have R1000 to spend and would prefer a 2nd hand older high end card than a new low end card.

Something like a 8800GTS or similar. Preferably not ATI although I would seriously consider a X1950XTX.

Oh yes, PCIe please.

Rest of the spec is as follows.

Q9300
8GB transcend
3 x 250GB SATA
Biostar TP35D2-A7

Jugs, If you could scrape a bit more together you should maybe look at the GTS 250 - New card on the market and decently priced. I know Esquire were / maybe still running it on special for around R1595 ex. I reckon contact them and see what they got. If you can get that card at the price it is a smoking deal IMO. Good luck ;)

Personally I wouldnt buy a 2nd hand GPU. I have always found they seem to have a certain life span and then die. Not all of them, but I see it pretty often. And you don't really want a 2 year old card, unless it is a really amazing deal.

Secondhand for R1000 you could afford an 8800GTS 640/GT if you were lucky, a new 4670, a 3870, a 9600GT. Of those the 8800GT is most recommended IMO but the hardest to find for 1000.

Remember that the GTS 250 is a rebranded 9800GTX+. Really deceitful on NVIDIA's side.

True - but still a good price don't you think?

Yeah, definitely a good price! I don't doubt that for a second. Just a bit devious. Personally, I wouldn't support a company like that, but that's just me.

Its good, just try get hold of Esquire and get the 250GTS instead, same price about.

I've been trying since Thursday, today they have it on the system, just not pricing, so hopefully first thing tomorrow morning they'll have stock...

Cool, I've posted the question in the dealer section.

Why not just go for the 8500GT man, I mean, I know it's the sh1ttest card you can get but why would you wanna spend money if you're not a gamer ?

an 9800GTX+ isn't needed for desktop graphics man.... juggy, go buy yourself a Bucket filled with 10 kg's worth of Peanut M & M's. c'mon juggy - they're tasty!

ahh... not quite, Nividia chopped off like 5cm's off the card... then they lowered the power requirements(only 1 6 pin connector needed) and then changed the cooling... the GPU maybe the same, but i heard that the memory is new 0.8ns memory :).

So apart from the lower price, the card is much better on a physical sense. ha ha :)

Huh, you be on the hard stuff or what?

I like the big card with the plastic cover and loud fans...;)

if you're not a gamer, don't waste money buying a gaming card.

It's like "nah, I don't really play guitar, or even like music really - I just like the color of the strings... that's why I bought it."

so what if you get 3.0 in vista - who cares?

What about an 8800GT for R1100? Almost brand new in the box with accessories

Is that a good deal?

well, the gts 240 (read as overclocked 9800gt) is going to release soon hey, so could you wait till the end of the month? it would also take up the R1000-R1500 bracket :)

I can't help myself, that is how my brain functions unfortunately. If it looks nice and works well I have to have it.

I bought a paintball gun because I liked painting the walls of the buildings next door when they were building them. Only after a few beers though.
