GPU Advice

All of these cards under discussion in this thread.
Are they pretty decent?
For gaming I mean.
I've got GTA IV (which I know won't run on my current card), GRID and I think a few others which I've not installed yet and have also been looking at a new card at about
R1k range.

Perhaps I shouldn't be in here just yet - looking at Juggy's specs and others - I'm way off on the hardware side of things.

the gts 250 is a 9800gtx+ with lower power demands(it has 1 6pin connecter) and is shorter. So it will perform like a HD 4850 (or a little better).
this card will go from R1600-R2300, and it's advised to go for the 1gig because games like using the large buffer (gta LOVES 1gig+ memory because of the large draw distance)

The gts 240 is a 9800gt with a mild overclock, so it will be faster then a normal 9800gt... this will take up the R1200-R1600 slot

then the gts 230 is a 9600gt, and this will take up the R900-R1200 slot...

then on AMD's Side, they droping the price of the HD4000 series, so the HD4830/HD4750(or HD4770, i'm not too sure) should take up the R1200-R1600 slot, and the HD4850 the R1600-R2300 slot. This makes room for the HD 4890 which will be about R3000+ when it arrives...

These are what the prices should be, but i suspect you may have to add about 10% to 20% onto them (because this is south africa)

Thanks for that breakdown :)
And yes, from what I've stumbled upon, 1Gig is the order of the day for GPU's.

Scotty a lower end vga with 1gb of memory will not run gta4 any better than it would with 512meg because it won't cope with the add visuals.

What about an 8800GT for R1100? Almost brand new in the box with accessories

Is that a good deal?

Yeah if it is close to new that is a good deal. I paid R2.5 for mine just under a year ago. Not to mention the 8800GT is still a great card. I love mine, I seriously don't plan to upgrade it anytime soon. Solid card and for that price you seriously can't go wrong.

I won't deny that, but a gts 250 1 gig would do much better then the gts 250 512mb, the gts 250 is basically the 9800gtx+ gpu, which is a fairly strong gpu, and is slightly better then the hd4850 (in most games :)).

I agree that with GTA some of the visuals will need to be lowered... but the 1 gig version of the gts 250 would be able to take more, and could handle a further draw distance...

if you look here, you can see the 1 gig helping hold up the frame rates : link and here you can see the extra 512mb helping out: link

but as a whole, no many games max out the gts 250 (if you have a pc with other nice specs)

What is better?

8800GTS 320mb
8800GT 256mb

I'll assume the 8800GT is newer tech so it would be better?

Hey bro, looking at benchmarks, the GT will win quite a new frames depending on the resolution u'll be playing games at.

At lower res, it will even beat the 640mb GTS

If u can get a GT then go for it...though I have been seeing lots of threads where the 8800GT are starting to give problems and only underclocking fixed it.

Reminds me of that rumour about G92 based cards are flawed etc etc.

Anyways for 1k, the best is probably a 8800GT...best bang for bucks back then brand new, and right now 2nd hand :D

Just hope the guy still got warranty incase anything does happen :p

This is the exact card.

I would get if I were u..it still beats a HD4670 for 1k

Though it might struggle a bit in native resolution on ur 22"

But then again most card would for the price around 1k

OK, plan has changed. I'm getting this rather.

XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 XXX Edition PCI-e Display Card

For R1200, a much better buy I think. Still has 3 months warranty.

Nice, got the same card. You won't be sorry! ;)

Juggy i am amazed this is still such a thing for you, your not going to game with it so go find a card for 1k and buy it.

Why are you making it so hard to decide which card your not going to game with :p
