this is meant to be a discussion thread .i have xfx 4870 it idles at 64 degrees and i was reading that other people have much lower temps so i replaced my case fans with bigger ones and now it idles at at 60 degrees .my problem is that now the gpu is at zero speed .it seems my fan is set to only run when temps are over 60 degrees and i was wondering if i could change this:)

The ATI catalyst driver centre, or whatever its called allows you to manually change the fan speed settings. Not sure about the 4870, but on my 4890 it can be done.

you can create a manual profile where you just sent fan speed to 50% or what ever you want.

Dude, those temps are also perfectly fine ;). Remember, South Africa has been having very hot temps... so the higher the ambient temperatures are, the hotter the gpu will get... It's only a problem when your gpu goes over 100 degrees Celsius, or the pastic on the graphics card melts.

Lol, I can only use the origional disk that came with my 4870 to install drivers, anything newer I download installs the actual driver part but not the ATI control center

Pfft, my two 285's clock 85+ degerees some nights. Just turn up the fans and keep shooting em charlies. They will survive. :)
