GPU fan speed: increase/ leave it

Lol~

He is still my friend lol.. But you know some people just don't think stright..

But I'll tell him again.. + I refered him to this forum so he can read himself..

:)

Ye I just mean in this instance, I don't understand some people. I mean, google if you're the type that doesn't trust people, but then don't ask.

my ati 4870 switches off the fan when temps are below 60 degrees like they are now in winter.

Swtich off? That's weird. Isn't it a bit late when it hits 60 degrees?

but I guess then your computer my be like silent lol..

Had to increase my 280GTX fan speen recently as it started artefacting after 2 years. Running it at 60% now and it seems to be better than ever even in games it only goes to about 55C.
Was quite supprised that it just started to give problems after 2 years of solid performance. I hope I can get a few more months out of it with the upped fan speed...

Have you ever cleaned the fan and so on the card? It could be heat building up in parts of the card that aren't reported by the temp sensor.

Or try (at your own risk of course) the oven trick :D

Have cleaned the card before I started to play with the fan speed. It was also an XFX card so it was pre-overclocked, had to underclock it a bit to get it to work perfectly again. Playing games like World of Warcraft with it so not to grafics intensive but badly coded to really drain resources. Strangely though now with it underclocked and higer fan speed, I get higher fps out of it, same ultra settings in the game. Just thinks the card is on its last legs, and will have to be upgraded sooner or later.

Doubt ill ever try the oven trick ;) maybe just before I decide to throw it out... Way too bulky card to strip it and heat it up ;)

FWIW, I tried the over trick with my old 8800GTX and thought 'ag what the hell, it anyways doesn't work well'. I too had artefacting, and 3 12min bakes at 275 degrees later, it was neither better nor worse. Turns out my VRAM was dodgy, so I tossed the card in the end. I'd say baking is a last resort option, and only if you have a backup plan (replacement card or so).

Don't the XFX cards carry extended warranties? You could also maybe try replacing the thermal compound, as it does tend to dry out and get flaky over time

I imagine they do have extended warenties for about 2years, that puts me still probably just outside of it... It was and to some extend is a brilliant card. Bit older technology than the recent cards, but still up there in performance. Not a DX11 card so may as well let it just run to death and upgrade (though under win7 it seems to run with DX11 drivers???)

Does the GTX 460 you refer to idle at those temps or is it while gaming etc? The idle temps of mine never go above 28 (except for hot summer days but then it doesn't go above 40 either) and just hits 60 when gaming for long sessions at maxxed settings with no manual changes in fan speed etc.

It must be said though that even at your temps it's not high, my old sapphire 4870 use to idle at 80-90 degrees lol, would get to about 120 so I use to use rivatuner back then to keep them temps down, however the fan controller on those cards weren't that good, it wouldn't change speed automatically

Personally PC silence is sacrosanct for me. So I'll sacrifice a bit of heat - and 40-50c on idle is pretty acceptable imo, I imagine it'll hit around 70c in gaming which is totally fine - just so long as I can have a quiet PC.

Mm.. i see..

I would like to have my PC silent as well.. but the HDD just doesn't want to NOT make a noise lol..

Plus.. I dont' have those expensive cases where there are "anti-vib" thingys for the HDD..

(do those things work actually? )

Well I have 11 hdd's in my system and I never hear them... Could be because of all the fans though (1 x 230mm, 3 x 200mm, 3 x 120mm, psu fan and v6gt fans) all on 100% lol

Don't you hear your HDD?

But then you hear your fans?

because when i first got the computer.. it was QUIET .. Like there was no difference from it being on and off.. But then.. it only had one HDD, and no extra fans etc etc (No gpu.. )

But I guess adding more things noise get generated more..

Any ideas on how to keep the PC more quiet? (new case? Will that help? )

A silent case like the Antec P-series will help, but it is pricey. You could insulate the sound by lining your panels with audio foam, replace your fans with silent ones, rubberize your hdd mounting points or even use the elastic method. Posting from the phone so can't give you links but I'm sure if you google you can get a lot of results

I see..
Thanks man,...

Most of my fans are silent.. Just the one on my PSU isn't.. and I think my GPU one isn't either.. mm..

Audio foam... Want to try that.. but.. where can one get that?

I theeeenk most car audio stores will stock it. From what I understand, it's about the same as what they use inside boomboxes/subwoofers

I think Ensolite or Dynamat is what you are looking for. Google suggests Dynamat keeps noise in, Ensolite keeps it out. I think the design is different but the principle the same.

TargaMat seems like the business to get, and the only price I could find was one from last year @ R150 a sheet of 95cm x 50.5cm. I found the info here.

Hope this helps!

Will be checking it out :)

Hopefully it doesn't insulate the heat as well :p
