GPU for +-4k

Hi All,

I have asked this before, but I never got round to buying my GPU due to some affirmative shopping items I needed to replace. But I feel now is the time for some upgraded gaming.

Anyway, looking at a new GPU for some gaming, basically BF3+4, Watchdogs and GTA when it finally drops.

I am looking at either the GTX 760 OC or the AMD R9 280, which is best? BUT consider the following: I need to run at least 3 screens for work, currently I run 2 from my onboard GPU and the main one from a GTS 250. Will this still work with the AMD, I have read that some guys have issues with it? I really don't want to buy an active this or active that to get it going.

Currently I have this:

i7 3770k
Some cheap MB
16GB Ram
785W powersupply
240Gb OCZ SSD

What am I missing and is there something better in the sub 4k price class? Or should I just get the 750Ti and go boozing with my change?

Looking to only buy new - need the VAT receipt for tax and stuff.

I've got an R9-280x and it's a beautiful card that performs well. You should be able to pick it up below R4k. If you shop around you might even get a GTX970 for that price... Rebeltech has a Galax one going for R4899. There is nothing in that price range that will come close.

I like what the 280x has on the table, but the drivers are a concern for me. Any experience with running multi monitors? 3 perhaps? :whistle:
 
I have a R9 280x too, and I found it to be marginally weaker than a GTX 770.

However if you could break the bank for another R900, you should buy the GTX 970, by all accounts that is card is a beauty.
 
Nah, only have 2. But it should be able to drive 3 monitors. Remember, the R9-280x is essentially a higher clocked 7970 GHz edition - AMD's top card from the previous generation. I'm sure it will run Eyefinity with ease.

And regarding drivers, AMD have made huge improvements in recent years. I haven't had a single issue with my mine.

For that price you can get something pretty decent.

I run 2x 7970 in crossfire with 3x 2560x1080p monitors and it works perfectly. The last time there was crap drivers or driver issues for amd was in 2012.

I like the PowerColor one and I will have enough left over for a couple of cases of beer!

How would I go about running 3 screens with that? 2 onboard and the main of the GPU or ???

Display Connectors: DL-DVI/HDMI/Mini Display Port x2

You'll probably need an ACTIVE display port adaptor to run the last display though.
 
GTX960 coming soon, so far it looks to be a GTX760 performance wise at R3000 instead of R3500-R4000
Which is essentially a R9 280X that uses a lot less power (400w, 550w if you want to push it with an OC).

IF that card comes out it would not be worth it to spend 4k to be honest.
Either spend R2000-R2500 on ati, R3000 on that GTX960 if that's the final price, or R5000 on the GTX970

GTX960 might be in a good spot for a sli upgrade a year or two down the line if you can't immediately afford a GTX970
