So I think my 8800gt had enough of me after four years.
In the week while I was playing tf2 my pc suddenly froze and gave me a rainbow to look at. This morning it happened again a couple of times and after restarting the last time even Windows were giving me distorted images.
So am I right in thinking it's my GPU?
I'm planning to upgrade at the end of the year to i5 2500k and asus 580 so I want to spend as little as possible on a replacement now.
Currently have E6429 c2d @ 2.13 and 420w power supply. 21"lcd @ 1690x1050. I'm only watching videos and playing some games at night.
Please give me some advice.

It does Sound like the GPU's memory that is going due to the fact that they would occasionally reach 80deg C.

One word: WAIT! or just a GS210/5450 to give you display, absolutely the cheapest card you can find.

Or you could buy the 580 and PSU now if you have the cash and later get the other stuff.

Hope you intend to replace the power supply to atleast a Corsair TX 650Watt for that GTX 580

Have you ever taken off heatsink covers and seen if there is a dust build up in fan etc.

I can't wait because my mb doesn't have display so I'm sitting with pc that doesn't work atm. Went into safe mode and it lasted just long enough for me to copy some videos to my laptop.
I'll be upgrading everything at the end of the year but will only have the money then. I was thinking of getting a 6670 512mb for R800. Is it over kill for what I need, playing some tf2 not really worried about any other games atm.
@Fuzzbox i'll have a look, as it's four years old anything is possible.
Thanks for the advice keep it coming.

i would suggest a hd6790 pretty powerfull card think its about 1200 at rebeltech, or just get the hd 6670 if that is in your budget :)

Ok so I was thinking last night I might keep my current PC when I upgrade later this year and make it a dedicated media center.
So I was thinking maybe i should get a more powerful gpu and then delay on getting the 580 and get a high end gpu when the new cards come out next year sometime.
I've been looking around this morning and looking at the Club 3D 6790 and Club 3D 6870.
Now the problem for me is that both these cards requirements are 500w but they recommend a 600w and 700w respectively and I only have 460w.
So what is the best gpu for money vs performance (under R2000) that i can get that will work with my 460w power supply?
Also keep in mind that I currently have a C2D 2.13 cpu, but will upgrade to i5/i7 later this year so there might be a bottleneck problem?
Thanks for all the feedback I really appreciate it.

I use my pc mainly with Windows Media Center 7 and it works fine. I've got a C2D 2.13 CPU as well and an ATI 4650HD card. Esquire are running specials for Woman's day and I saw a few nice AMD cards on special in the email. IMHO you don't need to go for a killer GPU.

Check here: http://www.esquire.co.za/specials/2011_08_08Main.html

The main reason I'm looking at something more powerful is because then I don't have to spend on another gpu at the end of the year.
I'll then be able to use the gpu with my new system until the new gen gpu's from AMD arrives, which sounds like it could still be in 2011 maybe Q1/2 2012.
I'll then move the gpu to my old computer and use it as a dedicated media centre.
So I pretty much decided that this is what I'll be doing now I'm just not sure if my psu will have enough juice, which will be the deciding factor.

How much is the Club3D 6870? Your PSU should be fine for one of these cards.

The HD6870 is around R1950.
The cheapest I could find was R1794 from rampage gaming and according to their site it's the overclocked version. Which is R200 cheaper that the normal one, something sounds fishy.:wtf:
The only problem with the 6870 is that it needs two 6pin power connectors and my power supply only has one. Do the four pin to six pin converters work?

You should get a molex-2-6pin converter with your card, which will work.

I also saw something at rampage gaming, that was a lot cheaper than other places... Have never dealt with them before, but will give them a go...

I haven't bought from rampage gaming but I like their site nice and clean. Their prices are also very close sometime cheaper than wootware or rebeltech.

Ok so I thought I had the above mentioned PSU but after checking on the power supply I saw the following:
DC Output:
+5V +3.3V +12V1 +12V2 -12 +5VSB
Max Output Current:
25A 25A 18A 17A 0.5A 2.0A
Max Combined:
160W 312W 16W
Wattage: 460W
According to reviews the 6870 use 295w at full load, does this mean my psu will be running at close to 100%(if I look at the 312w, don't know how these things work).
Will I still be able to run a HD6870 with this?
What is the difference between a single and a dual rail PSU?

Just fix your 8800GT by baking it, problem solved...then wait for the new gfx cards

Those rainbows appear when the the solder connection for your memory comes loose...just follow the post above and bake it for a while....you got nothing to lose and it'll take like 2 hours max (if you do it right)

Dude. With your power supply don't try anything more powerful than a 6790. You will kill your pc.

The problem with this is I'm scared of messing up my mb. I've read where people killed their mb because the solder melted and connected with each other.
I'm not tech savvy and I love taking stuff apart but usually I don't get them back together in one piece or in a working order :D. My gpu's heat sink has like eight screws connecting them with the gpu. So basically I don't want to take the chance sitting for three months without a pc.
@Qwikslver - Thats what I thought, thanks.

So at the moment I can afford to get a new PSU as well. How is the Antec HCG 750w?
This PSU will then form part of my upgrade that I will do at the end of the year.

That's an awesome power supply. You'll be able to X-Fire if ever you need to.

It got great reviews as well so hoping it will be a good buy.
So I'll be getting myself a Club 3D 6870 and the Antec HCG 750w.
Thanks for all the help guys!
