GPU Value Comparisons

Finally, the exciting parts of the Nvidia 700 series lineup are coming to light, and at a price that it would be a strong contender for my next rig (if its short enough)

And if this week goes the way I hope it does, I'll do a major update on the charts. Quite a few midrange cards have snuck in, and I'll add in the GTX780 of course :D

I'm in the same boat... Waiting on the 780's to arrive and also a major upgrade of a few other components.

Looks like the gtx760 is the new bang/buck king. Faster than GTX660ti and 7950, and $250.

I had a quick look at work yesterday, and yes, for what should be roughly R3k locally there is simply no other option - the GTX760 is the one to go for.

Yeah it's now up to AMD to produce something to compete at this level. They might have to drop prices across the board though. 7870xt down to $200 would make sense, and then 7950 down to $250.

Ouch. I just paid R3k for GTX660ti on Fri :banghead:
Don't bang your head for the GTX760. They are selling for R4k+ locally. What you should bang for is that you didn't pickup a HD7950 or 7870XT.

Agreed. 7870 XT is brilliant. 760 is way overpriced here. Once again, you cannot go wrong with AMD cards if you want bang for buck.

Comparing the 760 at stock to a 7950 at stock is just half the story. The 760 is already optimized and has little room to OC; whereas the 7950 can overclock really simply and stably passed a 680 760...
If you play on higher res than 1080p then the 7950 is the better option.

Going for 4k, and the definite winner is the 7950!

I just ordered a new Powercolor HD7970 with copies of Blood Dragon, Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider included for R4.3k. I have those games already so I'm hoping I can sell them for R500. I can get R500 for my outgoing GTX560, so this upgrade should only cost me R3.3k. Considering that this card competes well with the GTX680 and GTX770 and has 3GB of memory, I think that's a pretty awesome deal.

Great buy on the 7970! Now... Let me take that GTX560 off your hands!

is a GTX650 1gb a pretty decent mid range card? considering it will be a upgrade from 9800gt

The 650 is okay. Don't think in model numbers when it comes to graphics cards, always in terms of your budget limit. Without the price no one can verify if you're going to or have made a sound purchase.

I was in a similar situation, and ended up getting a 7790.

The 6950 is faster, but the 7790 uses a lot less power and produces less heat. The advantage is that, if I bought a 6950, I would have had to upgrade my PSU.

EDIT: Plus the 7790 is nearly as fast and comes with 3 free games.

Also note that the 7790 is considerably faster than the regular GTX 650.

The 7790 is more modern, and therefore physically smaller and in need of less resources. Each card has their positives, but if gaming performance is what you're looking for then the 6950 wins by a fair margin.

Is this from Wootware? What is the Powercolor range like - not really familiar with them? I am also in need of a GPU as my HD6950 bit the dust, but I don't know whether to hold on for product clearance specials for the new range of cards, or whether to just get now what with the exchange rate dropping...

Right now I have an old HD4870 chugging along in my new case.... :)

Powercolor is obviously not the greatest of brands, but it comes with a stack of valuable games, has a two year warranty and will perform fine at stock configuration. Considering that it's only costing me around R3k when factoring in the sale of my existing card and the included games, and that the card compares favourably with the GTX770 and GTX680, it's an amazing deal. You'll be lucky to get something decent for R5k when the HD9000 series hits at the end of the year. And GeForce prices are terrible in SA, so finding one for a good price will be unlikely. And yes, it's from Wootware.

Thanks. I actually ordered the Powercolor 7870 LE today from Wootware for R2900 - and then changed my mind and got the Powercolor 7950 for R3400. I'm cool with the brand. Not an overclocker, and if Wootware are willing to put their name behind it in that they import it and cant simply return to supplier in a day or two, then I am comfortable. And its an awesome price for a 7950 - and that's before you factor in the 3 games (ok, vouchers therefore) - none of which I currently have.
