GPU Value Comparisons

Hey all

Sorry to hop on the bandwagon here, but a question of interest.
I am looking for a replacement for my R9280x, which hasn't died, but am looking to swap to nVidia for personal reasons.

I have been eyeing out the GTX 970, which feels to be a decent replacement/upgrade. My query is whether these cards are still "worth it", with the looming release of the 1000 series cards, which I intend to upgrade to as well. My heart is telling me to take the leap, my head is saying I'm wasting money. It hurts a little more considering the Galax card I want to get is a little over R1000 more than the R5000 it was mid 2015 :(

In Pascal we Trust ! :p

Frontosa has the gtx 1070 on the new price list.

Just over R9000 cost price for the asus founders edition 1070 :(

It's about a grand, right? $449 + VAT on import + markup? Dunno if that's good or bad, tbh.

I agree with both these points.
So the fuller story is that my intention is to do a full pc upgrade. While there has been a slight recovery in the Rand's strength, I'm happier to run with the outlook that it will weaken further, than have a tangible gain.

With that being said, my goal was to do as much of an 'upgrade' as I could now, while waiting for AMD and nVidia to release their new graphics cards later this year. That includes a graphics card which could see me through a potential case where the 1000 series cards are too "overpriced" to warrant a purchase.

Why not do a 'temp' purchase of a 2ndhand 970 or so, and wait till the 1070s get released to sell it and buy new? You won't lose much. I don't think it's a good idea to buy any new 9xx card until things shake out pricing wise over here.

As it stands now, I reconciled that I would just need to keep my card until what I want comes along.
I was actually tempted to buy a new Gtx 980 seeing as though their prices have come down quite a bit, and then look at Vega/Big Pascal.

I know rumors are just that, but when estimated pricing started being thrown around of $1000, it cemented my feeling on rather just sticking with a GTX 1080. As you mentioned though, my wait will probably be a bit longer, as limited stock may artificially increase the pricing.

R14241 at Rebel Tech. And Rebel Tech had the EVGA one for R12999. All models seems to sell out on preorders alone though.
People seem to have a lot of money. My HD4870 is still serving my MMO needs.

Geez man. Time for an upgrade, unless you only play Dota 2 and Hearthstone. I have an HD7990 (OC'd with liquid cooling) and wouldn't mind updating to a 1080 for the VR capabilities. I can wait for the next round of Nvidia (or AMD I suppose) cards though, when VR equipment is more affordable and better quality.

Yeah, it is starting to show its age. Will probably go for something like the AMD RX480, depending on price. I have to upgrade my wife's PC as well, so everything is double ...

You could buy a second hand graphics card on Carbonite and get a huge upgrade for cheap. Lots of second hand graphics will be sold based on the new cards.

I was hoping the Galax Exoc cards would be around R7500...somewhat disappointed panda.

The Exoc is $450, so it's unlikely. I would expect to see stock cards which should retail around $380 for more like R7500.

I need a sensible replacement for my GTX660ti OC. This is the only HW item that wont allow me to play the new Doom.

Eish...the Exoc 960 and 970 were consistently the most affordable 9x cards you could get here. Hoping that's just a demand thing with the pricing of the 1070.
