If its a stock version of the card then yes, you should be able to flash it and get more value out of it. With the dual bios, the risk is minimal but proceed at your own risk as with any other overclocking / flashing attempt

got myself an hd 6950 2g. apparently one can flash it to 6970 with an easy bios upgrade. makes it even better value for money then.
any thoughts?
My friend did this... ended up damaging his card. The ram apparently doesn't like those speeds in the long term. So buyer beware.
okay. similar 2 gig card? was the bios he tried stock 6970 or one of the asus OC ones?
AFAIK the cards are identical except for the locked shaders and it takes 2 x 6pin instead of 1 x 6 and 1 x 8 pin power connector - everything else including RAM should be same?
I'm sorry, but I just have to say that you can't damage the RAM by simply using a higher frequency!but then like I say his ram got damaged by the frequencies..
The flash they are talking about is only to unlock the shaders, you still have to OC the card to get the 6970 speeds. I did it on my HIS card with no problems and a nice performance boost.
I followed this guide: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159
