Grace Mugabe thesis a fraud

Academics say Grace Mugabe’s PhD thesis, which was recently published, is a fraud.

The former first lady got her degree in record time back in 2014 but there are claims it’s only just been written.

Pedizisai Ruhanya, an academic and researcher, calls the thesis the greatest academic fraud in history.

Writing on Twitter, Ruhanya says the thesis makes references to studies published in 2016 and 2017, two years after the former first lady was made a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology.

Some of those connected to the main University of Zimbabwe, which awarded the degree, say it’s tarnished the institution’s reputation.

But the official Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission maintains it isn’t going to investigate the awarding of the degree to Mrs Mugabe, despite the outcry.

After graduating from primary school in her village and moving to Bucharest, Ceaușescu attempted to continue her education through night courses, but was expelled after being caught cheating. As such, her formal education was minimal. Despite this, during the communist period she was promoted as a scientist, and was also awarded a PhD in chemistry.


After the Revolution of 1989, several scientists have claimed that Ceaușescu had forced them to write papers in her name.[ Claims have also arisen that the university gave her the honour of the doctorate solely because of her political position.

Elena Ceauşescu did not have a BSc, but the power of her husband Nicolae – Romania's dictator until communism fell – still made sure that the University of Bucharest awarded her a PhD in chemistry. The contents of her many scientific papers were penned by others
