EDIT: http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/current/story/459695.html

Graeme Smith has launched a scathing attack on former South Africa captain and selector Kepler Wessels on Twitter and hit back at the criticism his side have received after being dumped out of the World Twenty20 in the Super Eights stage.

"Find it amazing that kepler can sit and say should have picked a younger squad when he was 1 of the selectors who chose it!unbelievable!" Smith wrote on Twitter and followed it up with "Atleast we own up to playing poorly.but all these so called experts/ex players im not sure I see a winners medal hanging round there necks!"

South Africa lost heavily to England and Pakistan to finish bottom of the table in their Super Eights group and have won just a single global event - the ICC Knockout in Dhaka 12 years ago - since their reintroduction to world cricket in 1992.

Their recent failure prompted a clutch of former players to voice their concerns, with Graeme Pollock saying "The two run-chases, against England and Pakistan, were two of the most amateurish I've ever seen," and former selector Hugh Page saying: "In every other side, there's a young player - sometimes two - who will go after the bowling early in the innings, I'd like to more young players to be given an opportunity."

Though nobody has as yet called for his head, Smith has been in charge for seven years and is under pressure to turn things around soon. South Africa play West Indies in three Tests, four ODIs and two Twenty20s beginning May 19.

The beginning of the end?

Maybe it is time to have specialist squads (and captains) for the different forms of the game. Previously I was opposed to the idea, but with the amount of cricket being played nowadays, it makes sense to allow players to specialise in a certain version, albeit a combination of T20/ODI and Test cricket.

The main driver behind wanting to play all the versions is most likely money. This is understandable as a professional cricketer has a limited shelf life and needs to accumulate as much wealth as quickly as possible.

Should CSA then not structure the remuneration according to revenue generated per version of cricket, instead of having an all-encompassing player contract?

Players can then state their preference/s.

International tours can then be re-configured to accommodate the different versions of the game. We could get back to the purist, 5 match Test series that I really enjoy. Shorter tours consisting of only T20 and/or ODI's can be scheduled simultaneously!!

Um, he is right.....

**on a side note this is going to be fun, isnt Kepler Lancelots' cricketing demigod :p

Dude, you are clearly infatuated with me. I have never made reference to Kepler.

I think we should use the T20 as a place to groom players like what the aussies are doing, even grooming Clarke for the captaincy for their ODI and test teams.

Honestly i think there is just way too much cricket going on, this T20 WC could have been over two weeks ago but the ICC still persist with this two group stages module. Scrap that horrible champions trophy for the T20 WC, the IPL is just going to get longer with more teams joining, then theres the champions league, and then the local leagues with International tours in the middle, the ICC should get together with the BCCI, ECB, CSA and CA to sort out some kind of structured timetable

I am so sick of the crap performance by the Proteas (for the past few years). They are k@k. Fire everyone and start over.

Well Google turns up nothing. Please could you check in that parallel universe of Pump, where LancelotSA is idolised, and tell me what you find.

you're derailing my thread, please take your drug induced banter somewhere else ;)

Um, he is right......

he may be right, but thats not how you react as a captain

Dude, you got a screw loose in that head of yours? I was not even present in this thread before some wise ass made this comment :

Oh, wait, it was you wasn't it? Now I ask for some evidence of this and you ask me to stop derailing. You sir are clearly not awake yet....

yeah like im going to go search through your posts to find your posts

it was back when the poms were here and we called them chokers and kept quoting keplers statements to justify yourself

I reckon there should be 2 formats, tests and pro 20 :D drop the 50 over game, seems to be out of place in the current climate and offers nothing anymore.

People enjoy tests for the contest and enjoy t20 for the excitement but the 50 over game is out place with nothing to keep viewers interested.

With who?
Whether you like it or not, the players that play for SA are the best this country has to offer. If they have a mental block thats a different issue, but throwing new players in is not going to fix anything. We've seen how (usually) badly new players who come in perform (kleinveldt, mclaren, bosman etc), and even after coming in, they don't put in consistent performances (Duminy, A Morkel etc)

I read an article recently, about how this furore is so similar to what happened after WC WI'07. After that we went on to become the top team in both tests and ODI's, and won historic test wins in Eng and Oz...(sorry to be harping on about this, just kinda proves my point...)
So I don't actually mind the harping on too much, since I think it'll just hopefully spur them on to new heights.

But I'm no expert myself, so I'm not in a position to judge everyone else. Just don't think you guys should be so quick to mention simple solutions which aren't really so simple...

I have never liked Smith, he is not a leader and certainly not a gentleman. I remember when he got chosen to captain SA, he was barely chosen when he ran his mouth over something the Aussie captain did in a match they played, in front of the TV cameras at the post match presentation! You could see the Aussie captain was totally blind sided. Bad form, I thought to myself, very, very bad form from a captain. I was ashamed to think he is the captain of the SA squad.

Before this I have never heard or seen something similar anywhere in cricket. There were gentlemen's rules in place, such ramblings and rants were reserved for closed door meetings, not for the public's ear. I'm well aware that there might be some incident somewhere in the history of cricket, a lot of players loose their cool, but captains should always restrain themselves! It looks like he is making it a habit to get people to loath him.

He is an excellent cricketer with some amazing stats behind his name, but one man does not make a winning team. Let his captaincy record speak for itself, if it is not up to par then the cricket board MUST make changes. Keep him as a player but look elsewhere for a new captain.

Agreed! A leopard does change it's spots!

Have to agree 100%. It's time for us to get a new captain. The day when he is on form he can be a devastating player but his captaincy is nowhere.

Yeah,he was probably drunk when he did it,according to his grammar(not sure if my grammar is right there) Id like to know what he was replying to?Where did kepler say all of that stuff?
