I'm having a pretty ugly time with my ADSL. Can other forumites please help by providing comparisons.

Step 1 - State package and sync speed
Step 2 - Run speedtest.net to Amsterdam OOKLA server
Step 3 - Tracert to google.com, then take the 2nd hop IP (the one after your router) and run 100 pings to that address with 4kb of data.
(ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -l 4096 -n 100)

My Results

1) WebAfrica Prepaid capped (10Mb/s sync)
2)

3)
Using 2nd hop on tracert to google.co.za
ping 196.210.145.129 -l 4096 -n 100

Code:
196-210-145-129.dynamic.isadsl.co.za [196.210.145.129]
Ping statistics for 196.210.145.129:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 87, Lost = 13 (13% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 68ms, Maximum = 1032ms, Average = 215ms

and

1) Afrihost 4Mb Business Uncapped (10Mb/s sync)
2)

3)
Using 2nd hop on tracert to google.co.za
ping 105.236.8.129 -l 4096 -n 100

Code:
105-236-8-129-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.8.129]
Ping statistics for 105.236.8.129:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 77, Lost = 23 (23% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 68ms, Maximum = 1141ms, Average = 221ms

Telkom tells me that what I am experiencing is a national problem. I don't really buy that. Help is appreciated.

LOL! WOW!

You just showing off now :)

EDIT: Been stuck on 4mb G.dmt since the 10mb announcement. How long is that now? 5 years?

Thanks to all who have posted results. So far, confirming my suspicion that it is not a "national problem". Is there anyone else here from Grahamstown? If so, please post.

@Gatecrasher: The speedtest to Amsterdam on my 10Mbps line (WA 30GB MyBB special) just increased from less than 1Mbps to ~5Mbps after 7PM.

Gatecrasher... cable fault. Report it and insist on a ref number. Do not let them fob you off and say they have done a quick test on your line and there's no problem. Tell them you want your physical cable checked as there is a short on your line.

Thanks Micky. I already have a reference number. Will follow up tomorrow.

@Gatecrasher: Try to do a speedtest to Douglas (Manx Telecom) Scotland. I am getting around 8Mbps but only 1-2Mbps to Amsterdam.

My 10Mbps line has been performing very erratically for some time. At the moment I'm seeing a 3% packet loss which varies. I assume that your line is still syncing at 10Mbps and the noise margins are normal. I assume that exchange/ISP congestion is to blame. The speed tests were done from my WA account.

100 packets sent 97 received 3% lost
Min 58ms Max 157ms Ave 86ms

Everything has the appearance of being fine, but individual download thread do not exceed 20kB/s after an initial burst. I can max the line if I have enough connections, which is fine for multithreaded stuff like premium news servers, torrents and download managers, but totally useless for regular downloads, youtube, live streaming etc, and general browsing is slower than usual.

Hi Gatecrasher

I'm in Grahamstown and having the same problem. I first noticed it a few days ago trying to play Guild Wars 2. It's playable but the moment I enter an area with a high player count then it lags to all hell and gone .

1) Afrihost 1gig free account on Telkom 4mb

3)
Ping statistics for 41.181.53.214:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 83, Lost = 17 (17% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 128ms, Maximum = 159ms, Average = 131ms

All of the above has been happening on my Mweb 4mb premium uncapped account as well, before their Seacom troubles started today. Any sort of streaming has been completely useless.

Hi askari,

Interesting. Thanks. The technician who came around yesterday said a lot of people in town had been complaining of similar issues. So it could be a cable fault between Grahamstown and PE. The question is how do we get Telkom to do anything about it?

Grahamstown works to Uitenhage exchange and then to PE ...

Another Telkom technician came to my house and tested the line and did some tweaks to fix a "slight problem" and of course, nothing has changed. He also confirmed that there is a problem affecting the whole of Grahamstown. He said it is being investigated by "the ADSL guys", whoever they might be.
