Lets see, that was just after the Napoleonic Wars in EUROPE. The face of Europe had changed forever, countries borders shifted, new countries formed. Do you see the EU changing all the names of the European capitals as a result? No, what is left is history - that can't be changed.
 
it seems that since the ANC feels that it can really do anything right it can at least rename a few places to point at and say look at progress. If they feel so strongly about abolishing the past why not flatten the whole country? Everything here before 1994 was designed by Europeans. it is always amazing how black ppl can complain about all the the Europeans did. when van Riebeeck landed at the cape they were living in grass huts. now they wear suits (european) and drive cars (european).

Perhaps thinking back, Graham should have been ruthless and eliminated all the Xhosa in the area instead of allowing them repeatedly to cross the accepted 'border' of the fish river. Then we wouldn't have had this problem.
 
I'm so sick of all this, as you say it was established by the British, so what's wrong with using the name given to it by the British?
 
I'm starting to think that the ANC and its supporters are seriously suffering from inferiority complexes.
 
There would have been no PE, no George, no Grahamstown if the British did not create it, and build it there. The new government has no right to rename those towns.

Furthermore, Afrikaners suffered more under the British than the Xhosa did, yet the Afrikaners did not rename those places. I said this before, the Afrikaners built themselves as a nation, instead of engaging in such trivial but spiteful endeavours.
 
So which side of the Kei river are these places?

Are the nguni colonists trying to rewrite history to suit some agenda that had a modern civilisation operated by blacks on the slopes of Table Mountain when Jan arrived in the Cape?
 
Although in no way in favour of name changes i have to wonder what difference does it make? Albeit a complete waste of money i say change all the names once, get it over with and lets move on.

I can only speak for myself but I consider it a colossal waste of money considering our situation and and even bigger waste of money when the same government changes the names of the same places more than once.

Well our nation went from starving, having all their processions destroyed, their whole families murdered to standing on our own feet within a generation.

You would think the ANC within their great capacity of leadership could have done the same for their people in the last 13 years, rather than just changing the names of places, not even related to the common black man (average supporter) at the cost of millions of Rand.

Your opinion is just that, the fact is the Boere pulled up their socks to their knees and worked their asses off in comparison to what has happened the last 13 years can not be denied.

So name changes, the ANC has no right to change the names, as their would have been no town in existence had it not been for the British, or the Boere if you will, who brought civilisation to South-Africa.

It can also be argued, that those people who could write the names in stone and on paper, should be the people to name a location.
