Hello! (first time posting to My broadband, btw.)

I have my degree in graphic design and I want to begin part-time studies in Web Development next year. (I have adequate of HTML and CSS.)
If possible, I'd like to get some kind of qualification out of the course involved.

Any suggestions?

Hi larkspur, Welcome to myBB.

Web dev is a rather broad field, many areas to go into.
There is web applications, Web designs, security, databases, php, html, javascript and the list goes on each with their
own certification paths.

Do you have in mind what route you are interested in?

Best advice, teach yourself...

Anything that you can get on paper is worth 1/100th of real and practical experience... Build a portfolio for yourself, that is always a good start and something that will gain you favor in the jobs market.

Check out www.learnable.com too, tons of good learning material for beginners.

This is true too... There's ton's of options in terms of broadening on your skill set, you'd only really be able to tell which best suites you after some real experience.

Programming is not something for everyone, generally you need quite a maths head but when it comes to front end design and development... There's a whole range of things that you could go into that you might actually enjoy...

New technologies? If you know HTML and CSS, maybe you could look at learning about ruby, jquery and sass... With so much learning material and so many frameworks, etc available freely it's actually not such a big mission to get setup with something that you can work on / with then just concentrate on the front end of things (as you're a designer).

Not many certifications to go into that, unless you go for a degree or diploma in I.T. But like IndigoIdentity said experience means a lot more in this field. If you want have a look at http://www.codecademy.com/ or http://teamtreehouse.com/ to teach yourself these skills and do some freelance jobs you can handle to build your portfolio and experience.

Stay away from codeacademy. It's ****. Check out codeschool.com.

Hi larkspur, welcome to the wonderful world of mybb!!

Well screw qualifications, if you can show your work it means more than a qualification.

Teach yourself start of with the following http://www.codecademy.com/

Hi larkspur,

I think the fact that you want to do web development is great. I agree with the other people regarding the fact that web development is very very broad. Although there are various fields within web development and multiple programming languages that you can pursue to learn it is a very good idea for a graphics designer to be able to code. Even if you understand the basic of certain languages. It will make you a better designer as you will begin to understand how the technical part of things are working and thus you can design better.

I studied graphics design and did a lot of coding on the side. I learned PHP, JavaScript and jQuery Mobile and it definitely benefits me because as a User Interface Designer I have more of a technical background now. Although this is not part of web development I also started to learn Swift.

I always tell people doesn't matter what you do in live if you can code you have an advantage above others. (Or thats my view on it rather :D)

Good luck though
