graphics advice

I have a Geforce 7950 GX2 and for all my gaming needs this card delivers :D

Also used to be a Huge ATI fan, but a lot of newer games were developed with Nvidia support build in hence my switch. ATI however might be again a future card since their pairing with AMD if your an AMD fan aswell :D

In your upgrade priorities I would put the Ram down first... For the bigger Graphics card you are gona need more system resources... And though Ram is not always noted as a huge improvement you will feel the lack if you dont have it. Secondly your PSU to get your system ready to handle the new Graphics card then the Graphics card :D



When you are ready for graphics upgrade you can think of PSIe and double and quad card configurations :D


BTW any one tried 2 x Geforce 7950 GX2 in Quad mode yet?
 
See the link I posted and think about it, you don't want a DX10 card yet, buy a cheap DX9 for now, then when a good DX10 game and card comes out (mature technology) spend that R4000. Buy an Nvidia card, as Vista sucks and you will get better performance in Linux these days. You will need 2G for Vista, do not even try it with 1G.
 
another question, i'm going to up my ram from 1g, currently i have 2x512mb ddr2 800mhz jetram and my board has 4 slots, if i add another 2x1g sticks ddr2 of the same frequency but a different brand will it still run at dual channels? my board supports upto 4gigs of ram

Vista runs fine with 1GB of ram, and the 8800GTS is just a good card to buy right now doesn't matter if it's for DX10 or not.

Quite a few good DX10 games are coming out very soon. Oh and rofl at getting better performance in Linux, you can't play most of the games in Linux, don't worry about the performance yet.

Have you looked at the latest performance benchmarks for XP vs Vista, it's basically all about the graphics drivers, not much about the OS, Vista even beats XP in a few benches, the OS bloat doesn't have as big an effect on gaming as a lot of people think.

EDIT: Ja, and I also think dualchanel won't run on 4 sticks, too bad you've got 2X512mb atm..

Friend of mine ran XP, Quake4 did not work at all on his PC, we installed Linux, and it ran at 40fps.

For how long did you run Vista, and why do you say it suck? For some reason my Vista installation is much more stable than my previous XP. No more BSOD for me thus far. But i would like to know why your experience sucked.

@cereal - dude AFAIK dual channel will run with all 4 slots filled(otherwise why are there 4 slots)

It is optimal to have matching RAM, but should work without at the timings of the slowest memory.

I may be wrong....
 
thanx for the input, but i'm looking for a definate answer, coz then i dont need to sell my current ram, then i can just add to it, that will work out cheaper
 
Got my 8800GTX this morning I can hardly breathe.

All my games including DIRT is running at super smooth frame rates:eek:

So glad I got rid of those two 7800GTX's.

Sli is over rated.
