All right, here is the dope...
I own a GV-R587UD-1GD Gigabyte ATI HD5870 card that never work well from short after date of installation. The first few months wasn't that bad but it got worst with time. Playing 3D games with AA enabled started giving me grey screen with vertical bars and the PC would freeze. After reducing the GPU clock speed from 950MHz to 800 MHz it seemed to get better but after a couple of months the same started occurring.
I reduced the clock speed further to 800MHz and it was working again. I used to play League of legends a lot after that which seemed to be immune to the problem but towards the end this also stated giving the grey screen.
Sometimes the PC would recover and all would be fine again and the game could be continued other times it required a reboot.
I did some internet searches regarding the problem and came up with the flashing of the bios. I wasn't keen on doing this but since I had a problem I tried it.
I had never flashed a GPU before and followed the steps as listed on the gigbyte site.
I used easy boost and the BIOS that matched my GPU while in Windows. Easy boost said it was a success and I rebooted.
Death becomes her...
After about 1-2 minutes after post I start hearing a high pitched buzz which starts out louder and becomes softer until disappearing followed by the Monitor loosing signal from the GPU.
I read about easy boost on the forums and decided to use ATIFLASH in DOS which I did with a bootable USB drive.
It took many attempt as the screen would die before I could type in the commands. I finally managed to unlock the ROM and flash the Bios successfully but the problem persisted.
Is my GPU dead? Why would it work for 1-2 minutes, even showing the windows boot up logo and then die?
