Graphics card dying?

Definitely your graphics card. You could possibly extend its life a bit by underclocking it and then sacrificing a few high quality settings in your games. Check out your fan first though.

Just try clean the dust out from the fan and heatsink. Thats usually the biggest cause of excess heat.
Make sure your fan is spinning. You might have to clean out and re-grease the bearings a little if the removal of dust doesnt help..

Are you by any chance running the latest nVidia drivers - 257.21?
I installed those last week with my 8800GT and it caused my card to overheat and fail.
There are quite a few threads on the nVidia and other forums detailing the problem but it seems like the new drivers did not monitor the temperature of the older graphics cards and so did not increase fan speed, leaving them to burn.
I'm sending mine back for RMA because it had a lifetime warranty.
If you haven't installed the latest drivers, don't :)

Sigh... I did the latest drivers.. So I just uninstall? Thank God you told me, I was about to fork out for a 5770

I'm just going to apply some thermal paste, see if that helps.. Meanwhile, anyone know of cheap coolers for the 8800GT?

my GTX280 was also running at 120C when playing games so I went to MSI support and we tried lots of stuff. At the end I needed to lower the voltages on the card. you can try that via afterburner, etc. try and see if the temps improve.

i didn't even need to lower my clock setting and i could even overclock my GPU a lot and my temps is supper fine. 80C in furmark for 20min first try that and see if you can lower the temps. I'm using my voltage mod for 6 months now and my card is super stable. the longer you can hold on the more money you save on new GPU
