So my friends Powercolor HD7970 is under performing on Metro Last Light and also shows grey blocks now and then (artifacts). It is running on the latest driver 13.4

I ran the games benchmark on his Pc and then I ran it on mine I have a HD6870.

Here are the benchmarks:

There are also problems with the shadows and this strange black block shows on the left on the game and also the new Tomb Raider.

Is there something wrong with the card?

I should also mention that the card has the coil whine sound when gaming.

It can't be over heating as he has a HAF-X case with plenty of fans.

Aren't the 13.5 still in beta?

Did you have a look at the Youtube vids I posted?

Cause I really think there is something wrong with this card.

i did why i said you need rma it :P

driver problems does not look like that .

My shadows looked like that when card was OCED to high , try a downclock and some higher volts.

Cool thanks I have emailed Wootware asking to RMA and I also linked them to this thread.

Card is running on stock settings, never been overclocked.

I had very similar issues long ago with my HD5750. Same shadow flickering and additionally I had black screens flickering all the time. My card went in for a repair and so to alleviate the symptoms when they cropped up later I underclocked the memory. That helped, but it would spazz out every two hours or so. I would send the card back.

Also, has your friend tried any other drivers to see if its software causing the issue?

He was running 13.1 when he told me about the problems he was experiencing, I then upgraded his Pc to 13.4 still with the same problems.

Put your card in his pc, set it up and test again...
Could even be MB related

Run 3dmark.

If it's under performing 3dmark will do a better job of telling you. Nothing wrong with trying beta drivers. The best way to test the card is simply if possible test it on your machine and run 3dmark. Then rma it.

No need to worry over the coil whine, almost all GPUs have them these days, and if you listen close enough, quite a few PSUs as well

One thing you could look at is MSI afterburner (or similar) to check the clock speeds, voltages etc while running benches. If clocks are where they are meant to be but you're getting artifacts, likely dead card. If it underclocks itself, potentially bad PSU or bad power circuitry on the GPU. And you get to check temps to make sure its not overheating despite all the fans (could be poor TIM application, so no amount of air is gonna help)

Will the free edition be good enough for this?

Thanks for this certainly makes it easier to know what to look for now. :)

Wootware has gotten back to me, they say the card is faulty (also getting that strange black block) and are waiting on Powercolor for a reply.
