my little brothers friends are here lanning and one of his friends computers shuts down and he gets a message "no signal". is it his graphics card (xfx 6600gt) or his screen?

It could be both actually, it could be a overheating problem, but I doubt the screen would make it shut down, so it has to be something with heat.

Start the computer, press DEL or F2 repeatedly as soon as it is turned on, the BIOS should load, go into the options and look for something to do with sytem temperatures, look at the temperatures and post it here.

It could also be that the graphics card is failing or has failed.

My bet is that it's the graphics card, I had a 6600GT which just died and wasn't even picked up by the computer when I rebooted. The motherboard just went to the onboard graphics.

But just plug the screen into another computer and you'll know for certain.

Check the gfx cable first. If the PC doesn't make any beeps when booting up, but you're seeing "no signal" on the screen, try switching the PC off completely for 10sec, unplugging from the wall, then switching back on.

If it persists, it may be the card.

I had the same problem on one of my machines.
Re-inserting graphics card sorted it out

no signal - means that the monitor is recieving no signal, usually because the monitor is not connected to anything

Check the cable to the monitor....
