I have an Asus AMD HD 6870, which is factory overclocked, and with the drivers came a program called asus smartdoctor using this I have noticed that when playing games (crysis 2 ect.) the running temperature can peak at 80 degrees and average at 70-75 degrees. My CPU is normally at 60-65 degrees when in use (using coretemp). My case is an Antec 300 which is a bit full but air flow seems good. What I want to know is if these temps are a normal running temps or should I be taking some steps to try cool it down? Perhaps a fan at the front? Also how much of a difference does a cooler gpu make to performance?

You need to make the fan spin faster, these generic 6970's don't cool well unless the fan is at 55-70%

Going to sound horrible but if you want to keep it cool you will need to do it.

Those temperatures are normal, unless you've configured your fan profiles to go above 50% during games.

I found that my Asus HD6970 DirectCU II also ran quite hot, simply because due to the default fan profile, its fans only ran at like 20%, even though the temperatures went to like 70'C.
After I've adjusted my fan profile to be like 40% at 40-50'C, the temperatures of that card never went over 60'C.

sounds normal.

as he suggest , increase the fan speed to about 60% or so.

your gpu will perform 100% even at 80c, its still in hes operating temps .
