Graphics card upgrade

It all depends on how much I get for my 8800GTS 320mb. I'm not desperate but I would like an improvement on what I'm getting now. Even if it's an increase of 10 fps on what I'm getting at the moment . I'm even interested in getting a 88800GTS 640mb if there are any around going cheap. Just to ease out the kinks in the frame rate @ the resolution I'm using :D

Same here.......Crysis

Check this thread.

Might be a cool idea...

1. 3rd Party Cooling (Zalman VF900 / VF1000) (AC Accelero S1) (Thermalright HR-03)

2. ATI CCC panel (has limits tho, something like 690 and 1180) (don't know it ATI Tool is supporting the 48**'s yet? / Rivatuner?)

3. If you want to get it up to 4870 performance, it will require a voltmod)

if your going to put on an after market cooler you might as well buy the 4870

the 4870 i read on guru3d is cooled pretty well

no point buying a card and spending 400-700 bucks on cooling, just buy the next one up provided its not more than 1k

in this case the 4870 wont be much more than 4850 although i have yet to see local pricing

rather use rivatuner to overclock your vga, although these cards are not supported as yet, they will soon i would imagine

The 4870 is approx. R1000 more expensive here, You can get a VF900 for under R300.
HIS 4850: R2250 (ikonic IT)
HIS 4870: R3404 (ikonic IT)
Difference: R1154

Those are the cheapest prices I've seen. So I would disagree with you.

The 4870's cooling is decent, but it still operates at high temps.
I would replace the thermal paste if I were to get one.

The VF900 on 4850: "Went from 73c idle to 38c at only 1400rpm" (aka VERY quiet)
Another person on Hardforum get's similar drops in temp, and both maxed out the available OC'ing in the CCC panel at 690/1150

Nice!

The 4870's cooling is not as good as you think, still operates at high temps.
I would replace the thermal paste if I were to get 1.

I think myself and you in this instance would prefer to get the most bang of the buck, in the other hand Killa is just replacing his cards when he see something better (2-3 in one year?). No conflicts, just different people's mindset and different financial situations. :D

Dude, no conflict here, merely stating my case. If someone says something, I have a right to answer them with more accurate details of the situation. Purely for the improvement of the collective common knowledge.

The 4870 is actually a lot faster than the 4850. It's really worth the cash if you have it. You can OC both cards. The GDDR5 memory on the 4870 will allow much higher clocks.

Where/When you getting yours? 4850 is running out of stock fast, I think DigitalAddictions had sold out all 10 of the 4850 today (?)

We weill see how good the VF 900 is when we are in summer. If Itai can't bring in Accelero AC1 then I may get a VF900 or something similar.

Really? I saw somewhere stating the current DDR 5 on 4870's bandwidth is equivalent/similar to GTX 280's memory bandwidth (DDR 3).

Oh well, I can always sell mine to someone who want to crossfire his 4850 :D

not really dude

in the last 3 years i have had 3 vga cards, 8800gts i sold and paid in 70 bucks for a 3850 because i wanted something new, hardly a huge dip into my pocket

then i had a bit of extra money lying around and in all my life i have always had mid to low end cards, 7600gs 6800gs 6600le

so i thought for once in my life i just want to have the best card on the market, now had i not seen my gx2 going 4899 ex vat i would never have bought one

i would never pay 7k for a vga but 5k aint to bad, i will also not have to upgrade for another 18 months atleast

i would say though for an extra 1k your getting a way faster product

thanx mre good to know we can still be civil :p

as mentioned by ekhaat when rivatuner support the 4870 it can overclock really well

Um.. yes it is, I never claimed anythig different.

Anyone can buy anything they want if they have the cash.

It's the same chip, so on average you will not be able to OC the 4870 as much (percentage-wise) as the 4850.

Yes that DDR5 is pretty awesome!

I was just illustrating that there is a discernable difference in price, and you don't have to spend R400-R700 on 3rd party cooling, as was previously stated.

You can get a VF900 for R235.23 from Prophecy.

And I would say that with a 3rd party cooler and OC'ing you can come pretty close for lot less. Though a voltmod would certainly help.
I must admit, the pursuit of the best bang per buck ratio is my field of interest.

Tomato / Tomato

It's all love brotha ;)

yea but with a cooler for 4870 and some overclock it wont come close :)

its not about having alot of money but if you can spend 2.2k on something, just maybe that person can find another 1k

if not then sure the 4850 is a great buy and good bang for buck, but so is the 4870

i wonder what the new 9800gtx will go for going to read the guru3d review now

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-9800-gtx-512mb-plus-review/12

seems like a good enough card and overclock rather well they say

Truth be told, IF i had the money I would buy the 4870 and fit it with an Accelero S1 with 2x 120mm fans, and OC as far as possible.

I just think the 4850 is more accessible. I don't particularly like forking out more than I need to.

yea atleast amd are back and maybe pricing can now come down

hopefully the 4870x2 will be the new top card and will force nvidia to stop rippin us off

so whatever ppl choose at the moment we finally have a war again :)

now if only amd could turn their cpu business around
