I'm considering upgrading my graphics card so I can get games to run smoothly at 1680*1050 @ medium/high. Unfortunately my 8800GTS 230mb is not quite up to the job. Games like COD4 and Crysis are playable but there are noticeable slowdowns from time to time.

How much do you think I could get for my card and which card would you recommend upgrading to?

Me just ordered HD4850 from Itai. Will install good cooling and OC to realize the potential.

Currently running 8800GT 256Mb...Will sell it sometime after I get my card.

Niice! That's exactly what I'm going to do!!

aaand then you can post a nice little tutorial on how you OC'd your 4850 for me as im an OC n00b :)

Oi back to topic damit

try getting one of them ati 4850/4870's

I'm sure they have the power and from what I've seen, they do have the shader power that is needed for these new games (800 pipelines )

so, then all you do is buy a crossfire board and then one of these cards, so later on, when a new game is released and you want a lil more house power, just go and buy another card :D

cheaper than 260 and 280. Some dude OCed 4850 or 70 with dry ice, bechmarked equivalent to 280.

I will not use dry ice... Thanks. You can just as well say you will mod the voltage to 220VAC and then claim it equivalent to the best. Its the price that matters rather.

1. 3rd Party Cooling (Zalman VF900 / VF1000) (AC Accelero S1) (Thermalright HR-03)

2. ATI CCC panel (has limits tho, something like 690 and 1180) (don't know it ATI Tool is supporting the 48**'s yet? / Rivatuner?)

3. If you want to get it up to 4870 performance, it will require a voltmod)

I am not going to extreme cooling or OC by any means, but who does not want bang for their buck.

BTW, voltage mod for 4850 will give it higher OC potentials.

2. Use amdgpuclocktool v9.8.

To the OP, it depends on how much you want to spend, what PSU you have, etc. If you've got a good PSU and are willing to spend R3000+, then go for the 9800GTX. Point-of-View is selling one for just above R3000.

Bad move, did you not see the news about Nvidia dropped their 9800GTX range's price by 30%? If he get one now, probably in less than a month's time the same card will be several hundred bucks cheaper.:(

It all depends on how much I get for my 8800GTS 320mb. I'm not desperate but I would like an improvement on what I'm getting now. Even if it's an increase of 10 fps on what I'm getting at the moment . I'm even interested in getting a 88800GTS 640mb if there are any around going cheap. Just to ease out the kinks in the frame rate @ the resolution I'm using :D
