Hi.. I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from a Nvidia GeForce 8600GT to a Nvidia GT220?

My current PC specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz (Q6600)
4GB DDRII 667 RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit
500GB HDD
19'' Widescreen
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT (512 MB)

A local shop is selling the GT220 for R999..

Worth it?

Im looking for a Nvidia card though.. What's a good one I can get? Don't want to spend over 1k..

Killadoob is right, you can get a 250gts for R1 000... now that will be an upgrade :p. Just make sure your Power Supply can take it.

Hmm... know where I can buy one of those in Durbs? Trying to avoid buying online

Just get it off the internet, NGR Computers are in Durban North, buy it online from them and you can go and collect it from them, email Cameron at [email protected] and he will sort you out.

Here are some of the cards they have on their website, otherwise if you want that Asus one I'm sure they can get it for you.

As my first few cards were Nvidia, I tried to stick with them. But then an awesome ATI deal came along and I just had to take it. Never looked back. I'm not saying you have to go ATI, but there's no reason to just stick with Nvidia. :)

If you really want a big performance increase, then go for the GTX 460.
The GTS 250 is very good value for money, but it doesn't have DX11 support. You can also have a look at like Carbonite.co.za for a 2nd-hand one in the region of R800.

One of the best deals that I've seen was the HD 6850 going for R1500 at Wootware. Now it costs R1650 again, which is still very good value!

The Xfx geforce gts 250 says it has 512mb ram. I have that now on my 8600gt, whats the difference in updating?

Memory Bandwidth, Processing power, Power consumption. Just because it's got 512Mb's of RAM it does not make it fast.

Inno3D GTS450 R1.1k at Rebel Tech cc. Bough one myself it's a pretty awesome card

Memory doesn't make that much of a difference except at high res. Think of it like boot space. The engine is what counts.

For a grand you should rather look at the GTS250 or 5670 if you want DX11. Even a GT240 would be a great upgrade for you with straining your power supply.

sorry to hijack, friend of mine has a budget the size of half a shoe string and wants a graphics card, need something for like +-400 bux, anyone suggest something that wont fall apart after taking it out the box? :)

Here's a good performance comparison list: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Axle/GeForce_GTS_450_OC/28.html

So I'd say either go for the GTS 250 (if you can get one for R1000 or less) or GTS 450 (if you can get one for R1100 or less).

The best value for money card atm is the HD 6850 (VTX3D HD 6850 going for R1650 at Wootware): http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6850/28.html
