Graphics Card Upgrade

8400gs is only good for scraping pigeon poo off the pavement

Everyone is saying the 8400 GS is crap, but no reasons given.

For under R500 what's the problem - it has to be better that the 7000 series surely ?

Perhaps it wont play Crysis on full but then very few cards do - especially any cards under 2 grand.
Forget Crysis for a moment - how about Unreal 3, COD 4 - FOR 500 bucks just how bad can this card be ?

ummm well if you want to play everything on low then its a fine card

i doubt that card could even run crysis

I'm running a 7600GT - and just finished Crysis ( yes, in low ) - so why wouldn't the 8400GS at least do the same if not better ?

Because a card from a new series isn't necessarily stronger than a card from the previous one (the 7900GT is considerably quicker than a 8500GT, as an example)

The 7600GT has basically the same performance as the 8600GT. Only difference really is DX10. Thus the 8400GS wouldn't keep up with your 7600GT too well at all :(

So if 3 grand is too much what should I look at in the 1500 range that would be somewhat better than my existing 7600gt ?

@OP
Get an E2180 from PCint for about R750 iirc
Get Hynix DDR800 RAM for R220 per gig.
Get one of the motherboards mentioned above.
Go for a 7600GT rather.
