I was wondering if it would be wise to wait a bit for the price on the 8800GT card to drop (plus be in stock) OR SLI my current 6600GT.

My gut is saying me to buy the 8800GT card but my excessive festive spending means that I can only get it in about 3 months time (or when the wife allows me to - whichever comes first)

Where can I get this card the cheapest?

Thanks in advance
SD

8800GT prices ain't going to drop for a while here in SA... looking at a 8800GTS 320Mb prices still look the same even after 8800GT's release. :(

BTW 6600GT SLI = bad Idea

I see that the SLI option is not a sound one (after some web searching).

DOes it worry you guys that teh 8800GT does not have direct x 10.1 support?

hardly any games use direct x10 yet.....so i aint worried about 10.1

I got me a nice Asus 8800GT from PC Zone in Pinetown, durban for R2300 this Christmas...

Definately a bargain for that price, so look around and see what you can get.

BT Games (Fourways) has the XFX 8800 GT (Alpha Dog version) for R2999 in stock.

I have phoned around Centurion and there seeems to be no stock at the moment. I guess I will have to wait.

In the mean time though I will do some reading on what killa suggested (ati 3850 or 3870). Killadoob ... do you have one of these cards?

yea i changed my 8800gts for a 3850 256 meg version

its runs better and picture quality is better

i used to be pro nvidia but if you can get 3970 that would be awesome man but the 3850 is better than an 8800gts

yea stoke but a 3870 is cheaper than most 8800gt's and performs slightly slower

its also dx 10.1

the 3850 is not far off a 8800gt

2 3850's in crossfire is faster than an 8800ultra which is about 5.5k

all im saying is that a 3850 will run most games really well

i run bf 2 full with 8 x AA and 1680 x 1050 and it runs really well

crysis runs fine on this card

cod4 runs full with a 3850 as well

so considering the price difference and the possibility of going crossfire and beating any nvidia card its a great card

take 2 3850's for about 3.2k as much as some alpha dog 8800gt's or 300 bucks less it rapes that card :) in crossfire

the 3850 is better than an 8800gts

Prohecy.co.za has the Chaintech or POV cards for R2500. I wouldn't pay R3000. There are other places (check systemshock dealers forum) with the XFX card for R2600ish.

There are loads of DX10 titles, basically all the newest games are DX10. No DX10.1 titles yet, not something to worry about either.

beanie

i ran my 8800gts 3dmark before i installed the 3850

i got 10278 with my 8800gts stock
same pc 3850 i got 11027

so for me its faster

i also got more fps on crysis with the 3850 on the exact same settings

Agreed, BT are not the cheapest by any means, but they had stock immediately available, which was more to the point of my posy ;)
