Howzit guys, I got a relatively old laptop, and a friend gave me a few pc games, I was wondering if their is any way to improve graphics on a laptop besides RAM as I have put in the maximum allowable amount, 1gig:(

I have the latest ATI drivers as well and only one of the games work.

I watched George Lopez the other day and their was an episode where his son was installing a new graphics card in his laptop, is this possible with laptops, I know I know I shouldn't believe everything on tv:)

Btw the laptop is a compaq Evo N1050v

any ideas will be appreciated.

Yes, you can upgrade some components on laptops, but this is only generally possible on higher end machines where you can order custom configurations online. You even get barebones machines where the machine pretty much only comes with a motherboard.
So yes, possible but unlikely that you can.

I'd advise selling the Evo N1050v (it's still got a frakin stiffy drive!) and getting a more recent 2nd hand lappie - with ATi or nVidia graphics... Just stay away from Intel...

Or swop it for a desktop PC?

Lol Chris you right it does have a stiffy drive, I got a second core2duo laptop but its strictly for work purposes.

I'd rather keep the compaq, its a reliable laptop, got it for 4 yrs no problems, was jus wondering if their is a way to improve graphics on it, but I guess there isn't.

There is one way...if its amd like my turion, u can use A64tweaker to increase the memory frequency (mine from 333mhz to 400mhz)

Then use Ati tool to overclock the graphics chip...it made some games playable.

But if its games requiring new features like sm3...then no.

Otherwise didnt ATI come up with a new usb graphics card?

Talking about this?

My DV9291 just blew a video card, 7k to repair.... Must replace MOBO and accompanying video card... Ridiculous if you ask me...

Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) was on hand to demo the concept with its Amilo GraphicBooster, an AppleTV-like unit with an AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU built in and hooked up to 512MB of GDDR 3 memory. The box can drive four displays simultaneously, the company claimed.

And XGP has its own connector, which although based on PCI Express 2.0 technology, does require the laptop to have a special XGP slot on the side. AMD has two connectors, one for eight PCIe lanes, the other for 16. At this stage it's unclear whether you can connect, say, an XGP with a 16-lane cable, using an adaptor, to a notebook with an 8-lane port.

It isn't a gaming laptop, unless you completely disassemble the thing you won't get gaming performance. And even if you do, it has a 1.7 celeron processor so it still won't be gaming grade. You need to get a PC for gaming, it's too expensive to game on a laptop.

thanks guys for the advice, I guess the only option is a desktop pc, it will be much cheaper then to choose a good spec laptop.

cerebus the laptop has a 1.8 intel processor, but u rite it still won't be gaming grade.
